I am looking at one 99 k1200 lt with 69k. The son is selling it in an estate sale and has been quite forthcoming with info on the bike. He said that he has a new battery in it and ir is started several times a week. He said it will need tires and when you shift from reverse to forward it goes into a neutral state and does neither. He further said if you go back to reverse and shift it more firmly it goes back into foreword gears.

I am going to see the bike and ride it on Saturday if it is not sold by then. Any thoughts, warnings or advise from you all would be greatly appreciated. Is this even worth going across the state of VA to look at?

Sometimes you have to move the bike back and forward a bit to get it to engage between reverse and neutral. Normal.

Look for leaks, if you can ride the bike, make sure there are no dash lights flashing after the ride. They will flash when you first start the bike. The bike has to go through a self check for the brake system.
Smoking on start up is normal the engine is sideways. It will go away after a minute.

As long as there are no leaks and the brake system is good ad the price is right for you then grab it if you like it.
Keep the front wheel straight when stopping, this bike is top heavy and takes a bit of practice.

If you can ride it, get it to highway speed, fifth gear, preferable facing uphill, and goose it. If the clutch slips you likely have issues. Could be a leak that has contaminated the clutch, could be a worn clutch. Either way, expect $600 plus a couple of solid days labor if you do it yourself, or up to $2400 to have a dealer replace the clutch.
