I'm having a dealer replace the clutch on my 02 with 39k miles. I am going to have them also replace the rear main seal while they are in there. The service advisor did not include in the quote the replacement of the slave cylinder. He said that they would replace it however if they see it to be leaking. I asked about drilling weep holes and they said they don't ( I expected said response).

My question is this. Should I have them replace the slave cylinder regardless if the existing is leaking or not? Parts cost is 150 and not sure if any labor cost would be charged if they replaced it.

Any other advice pertaining to this is certainly appreciated.

You should do the slave cylinder and the input transmission shaft seal along with the engine main. Any of these can cause a failure point and ruin your clutch.

It would only be about 15 minutes additional to replace the slave, since nearly all the work has to be done anyway. Three bolts holding the slave cylinder on (which has to be removed to remove the transmission anyway) and two hose fittings on the slave. I would be surprised if they charged you ANY additional labor to replace it.

MANY slave cylinders have failed in the 30-50,000 mile range, so replacing it now is the only sensible thing to do.

Thanks Gentlemen for the responses. On my way home, I stopped by and talked to one of the mechanics. I requested at that time a new slave cylinder as well as a new input transmission shaft seal. The mechanic agreed with this course of action and indicated no additional labor costs would be added. Hopefully that will get me set for a while.

It's too bad that he won't drill the weep hole for you too.

I understand their hesitance to modify OEM parts though. It's just too bad.

Another plus of having them replace the Slave Cylinder is the two year warranty on parts & labor for BMW work! I had my Slave Cylinder replaced as a precaution several years ago when they were replacing the rear main seal, and it really paid off about 18 months later when the Slave Cylinder started leaking on me! The warranty covered it all!

Just remember the weep hole is no guarantee, but rather an early warning device. Glad you are getting the slave replaced after all it is 8 years old.

Having just had a clutch failure from what is believed to be a failed slave cylinder on an '05 with 18,100 miles it was a good choice to have everything replaced while they are in there. My clutch went on June 23rd and I can't get into the shop until July 17th. So I am out of commission for the month of July. Since you are in there, an ounce of prevention will save you a month without a bike.

On an other note, I have discussed the weep hole or not with a friend who is a mechanic and BMW rider. Yes you get the warning, but you are going to be tearing it down anyway. When you do you need to go ahead and replace everything in there. On the other hand, it is really a strange feeling when you are running +5000 rpms and going no where slowly. So maybe a little advanced warning would be nice. I don't have a weep hole, but given my recent experience will probably have one in the future.

No gloating. Just trying to crunch numbers: wondering if the two year warranty, as in John's case, would make it more adventageous to have BMW do the work. Although the satisfaction of having done it myself is worth something.

Around 2k give or take. OUCH!!
I'm already beginning to feel the freedom in my life of not having to worry about holding on to so much money ; )

That's the right attitude! I did it myself and I was without the bike for almost a year (Mostly my own doing.) It is a LOT of work. A very personal choice. If something goes wrong, I would hesitate a great deal to dive in there and do that again.
