Anyone used the Braille Battery on the LT?
MY PC680 ODYSSEY went dead- 3.8 v..

I presently have the Odyssey PC680 but have been a little frustrated in the life of these now $150 batteries. I friend who races cars says the PC680 won't hold up and has replaced them with the Braille - B14115. Both are the same price.... $150.

Any other suggestions?

Braille 14115 Similar size, less weight 11.5 vs 15, more power...

The Braille has 15amp/hr in storage capacity
The PC 680 has 17 amp hours

I've used both the Panasonic & Westco batteries successfully for 4+ years each that are mentioned in other posts. They are both less expensive than either the Odyssey or Braille.

I have a Yuasa 51913 in my 01LT, new when I got the bike in Sep 2007. Its a water battery so I have to add distilled water every so often. My 99LT has a Westco AGM SLA sealed battery, new in mid-2008.

I keep both batteries on a trickle charge. All the time when bikes are in garage; I ride a lot, did 30K miles last year. I expect the batteries to last 4-5 years.

Whn the batteries go, I plan to replace them with a Universal UB12220 (a sealed battery) which is $46 from BatteriesASAP or $42 (but add $15 for shipping!) from batterytex.com. Need to shop around to check/update prices. This battery was recommended on this website.

The PC680 is a good AGM battery and will last a lot longer if you keep it topped up above 11.8 volts. I strongly disagree with your friend who says they won't hold up. You may find that you have a high parasitic drain on your battery or your alternator may not be putting out sufficiently. It will be interesting to see how a new battery holds up (or fails) in your application. I have used PC 680 for a long time in my RT and in my LT with NO problems what so ever.

I will agree that the price has gone too high and my next battery will probably be a Westco. I would always opt for a 20 or 22 AH in lieu of an 18 AH. Just my .02 worth.

Ole Toad is on the third year of the Panasonic mentioned on the URL above. All batteries that ole Toad has worn (OEM lead-acid - 2 yrs, Odyssey AGM - 5 yrs, Panasonic) have been tendered using a Deltran Battery Tender Plus that we bought in 1999. I bought an extry charger, just in case - butt it's hooked up to the Goat's lead-acid battery.

BTW, ole Toad sports an onboard i4C voltage readout thangie and it has never shown a lower voltage charge than 12.6 - until a battery dies.

That's a god price on that battery, Dick. My local battery store quoted me almost as much for that one ($100.00) as he did for the Odyssey. There was only twenty bucks difference so I went with the Odyssey.

Dick, our local hardware store just laid in a good sized display of these universal batteries. Being the inquisitive sort I checked on the availability of the replacement battery for the LT. As with most things there is good news and bad news. The good news: They have the battery on display! :) The bad news: In keeping with their retail price plus 65% pricing policy the thing costs $89! :( Now that I think about it there is a little more good news: The coffee is always on and the free popcorn is the best there is!

It is also nice to know that there is a local option other than the $250+ dealer price. :eek:

I gotta throw a little stuff in the conversation here. :stir: A lot of the more inexpensive (OK Cheap) batteries like the one in your link Dick, are UPS batteries. You will notice that none have a CCA (cold cranking amp) rating. IMHO, they are not rated for starting applications and that could be why some do not last all that long. The Odyssey PC-680 has 680 amp rating for 5 sec. and a CCA of 220. It is made for starting applications and BTW has an Amp Hr rating of 17. A UPS battery is not subjected to starting loads but keeps a power supply functioning with loss of input AC power. It is in deed a deep cycle battery and is meant to be deeply discharged and recharged frequently. OK Rant complete ;)

Just got word back from Braille and they recommend the B2015 for the LT... $160.
Cranking Amps (CA): 574
Cold Cranking Amps (CCA): 425
Amp Hour (AH) - Electrical Capacity: 21 amp hr
Weight- 15, same as Odyssey.

Agree that many of the "Universal" batteries are for UPS and etc. I am a little leery of them.

RE: my Odyssey, it was fine- till- I have the bike stripped down for new Fuel and Air filter and new throttle cables. It took a long time to get the right throttle cables in, so One day, I thought I would put it on the Battery Tender- just got a red light. Checked the voltage = 3.6v. I don't know the date it was installed, however, I have found the Yuasa batteries seem to hold up better.

The Odyssey did pretty good in my '97 RT...different bread.

Those specs look good on that B2015, but it is pricey. I think Braille's response is correct as the UPS battery isn't the correct one to use.

What is the battery chemistry on that one AGM or GEL?

One additional thought David, your tender may not be heavy enough to bring back a deeply discharged battery. Try connecting it to a 6 or 10 amp charger for a while and I'd bet it will recover. If you don't have a heavier charger, try taking it to a battery shop and see if they can put new life in it.

Let us know how you make out.

The best thing about the Braille battery is that you can find it in the dark. :rotf:

And it comes in different colours just like Braille ATM keys on Drive thru ATMs :confused: :histerica

To be fair, I am not sure folks in Boerne, TX ever care about CCA. CCR yes, but for the few days that one actually needs to worry about battery performance in cold air, there are probably other things to do. :bmw:

Pricey, but the 2.12 lbs weight looks interesting :rolleyes: I like their calendar girls but that wouldn't get me to spend $186 when I can get a PC680 for $107.00 :p
