I just changed my FD oil for the first time this past weekend. I had a black ball of fine metallic dust holding on to the drain plug magnet. It had the consistency of graphite lead in a pencil that was ground really fine like cinnamon. Is this the norm? The oil wasn't discolored much at all.

I'm like Pete. If the oil is clean and that's all you got. Change and ride. :)

Thanks guys, that's what I thought. I just needed someone to confirm it for me.

If you stir the plug in a cup of mineral spirits paint thinner you can then see if any larger shavings are attached. Black fuzzies are normal. Shiny chunks are not. The transmission plug is the same except that a few small chunks on the tranny plug is normal. Generally as long as it looks black you're ok.

Completely normal. The first time I changed my FD fluid there was a pretty good pile of fines on the magnet. Since then I have been changing the fluid every 3-5K with synthetic and there have been virtually zero fines on the magnet.
