Guys which LT would you buy. 2002-30k miles for $7000 or 2005 85k miles(salvaged) for $7500. Assume: Appearance and running condotion of both bikes are equal. Thanks

If it were me I'd take the 2002. Less miles, not salvage, more comfortable seat, manual center stand less to go wrong.

Wow! short, but powerful response. I guess the real reason for my delima is that the major change for the LT was in 05 I believe. I don't have a lot of knowlege about the bike, but I guess I was assuming "New & Improved". But it seems that in your opion that doesn't win over in this scenario.

I would not touch ANY bike with 85K miles - EVER. :cool: Salvage titles are a HUGE red flag - stay away from them at all costs, no matter what the deal.

I think if you take a little time you can easily find an LT with under 10K miles - and then I would pull the trigger. 99 to 04 and 05 and up models have subtle differences, what you are buying is the core bike with high speed two up touring capabilities.

Adding farkles specific to your taste, needs and comfort level make it even better.

If you are still considering a salvage bike, you need to investigate what it will take to get it on the road and legal. Not just mechanically, but titled as well. If that is what you want to do. It varies from state to state and can get expensive.

Plus, it was salvage for a reason.

Neither. I would go for 2003 or 2004. Or 2007 if you can afford.

In my opinion there is not enough price differential in your 05 opportunity... at those miles and with that title situation I would expect the 05 to be a couple of $k's LESS than the 04.
I think you have an optimistic/aggressive seller. beware.

Many salvaged bikes can be all right. The LT's drive train is well protected and many salvaged bikes have damaged tupperware beyond repair--and new parts are expensive--thus it becomes salvage. Can you have a BMW check out the bike ?

Due to issues of licensing a salvage bike, I'd go with the 02 if that's all you can find. Or be patient and see if a better buy (i.e - miles) comes along. You may find one with half the miles for around the same money. there are plenty of low mileage LTs out there.

No easy task . . .

No risk option:
As an owner of a 2002 that has had "no" issues and I do "all" my own maintenance I would go for the 2002 with only 30000 miles - this bike has just been broken in!

Risk Option:
Any bike with a "salvage title" is a gamble - do you like to gamble? Some are good at and can handle the consequences - some are not good at it and scream bloody murder when they realize they made a mistake.

On the fun positive side you are getting the following benefits in a 2005 - it has 16 more HP, reconfigured frame geometry, slight change in gearing, newer looks and dash, hydraulic center stand and possibility of a centralized locking system and landing lights.

So you must pick your poison and of course let us know the consequences!!

MattKas, your response was very intriguing, wondering why you suggested the 03 or 04?
Dfinazzo, great info on the 05, really makes me want to pull the trigger and deal with the consequences.
I think browad’s statement may have made the case, backed up by Rando and Lesn.
Here’s what I’ve decided: I’m going to get the 02. My thinking is, since this bike is about 2k under value, at a price of $7k, I can put about 10,000 miles on it and upgrade after that and not take a big hit, might break even on it. With a salvaged title and 85k miles already, I wouldn’t be able to upgrade very easily (in terms of trade-in). So, with the 02 on a trade-in next year, I still might get 6k toward an 06 or 07. Make sense???

Salvage title is a big $ blackeye here in Missouri , you only buy one real cheep and drive it into the ground ,with a LT you could part it out on ebay in the end and come out all right. Your insurance company may not want to cover it with full coverage also .
If they were same millage and cost I would go for the 02 as have no need for the elect center stand or key off almost no brakes power system , but I like the newer motor tuning ,just feels "bigger"

Stay away from the salvaged bikes UNLESS you have a great mechanic that can certify it as street legal AND tell you exactly how much it will cost to be made street legal.

The 05 and newer have different pistons and cams and produce about 15 more ponies. I really could not tell the difference between my 03 and my 05 when riding them both on the same day, the aditional power is not really impressive.

I guess I don't understand why you'd say that, considering that the LT is often touted as being good for 200K+ miles. If one were to know the maintainance on the bike in question, and had an understanding of what problem he might incur, why not buy a higher mileage bike - assuming the asking price was reasonable?
