A funeral cortege in North Wales comprising 50 motorcycles was halted in a major police operation involving patrol cars, a dozen officers including motorcycle police, police dogs, an armed response unit and a helicopter.
The bikers who had ridden to the funeral in Colwyn Bay, North Wales within speed limits but without helmets as a sign of respect, were stopped on their return journey as they made their way to the wake. The riders were directed into a slip road by police cars and bikes and details were taken.
The Bishop who had conducted the service, along with the hearse were also pulled over in the police operation.
The riders were told that they were being stopped for holding traffic up and flaunting the helmet law.
It transpired that, as is often the way with motorcycle processions, the riders had held up traffic at junctions to let the whole line of bikes through at once. A police car was among vehicles delayed at a junction, and since he had allegedly tried to force his way through the column, one of the bikers thrust two fingers up at him.
