I am looking at picking up a used Ducati Diavel in Austin Texas. I want to ride it back to Alberta. How do you handle plates and insurance down there for an in transit vehicle. Also what is the best way to pay for a private sale. Wire? Money order? Thanks!

I recently bought a used RT in Florida, did a wire transfer but it only worked because I went through a dealer, my previous bike was U.S. private sale and I paid cash, ask the seller what he prefers.

The dealer arranged for a 30 day temporary Florida plate for me to ride the bike home. I supplied my insurer with a vin number and the bike particulars and they gave me a policy good for 21 days, I had to have the bike registered with RIV Canada within 21 days or they would cancel the insurance.

Visit the Canada RIV site and find what particulars are required for the model bike you are importing. All paper work, title, bill of sale and VIN need to be faxed to your chosen border crossing 72 hours in advance of bringing the bike across.

Expect to pay HST when you enter Canada...that pretty much sums it up.

I recommend paying for the bike with a money order. Then send the seller a copy of the money order so he can take it to a bank and they can verify its validity. Then when you pick up the bike, he knows that the money order is good. If the bike is not what you expected, then you keep the money order and look elsewhere. Td bank is somehow associated with Wells Fargo bank and they can communicate information back and forth.
Good luck.
