I noticed my rear wheel has a slight bend most likely caused by a PA pothole.
It's something that could be left alone but it bothers me.
I did a search and there are several that do wheel repair and all claim to be the best so I'm looking for first hand experience.
Did the wheel have to be refinished, worth it, etc?

They are alloy wheels.
I don't know if they are pure aluminum.
In any case, I know of at least one shop here in Los Angeles that will refurbish or rebuild them, repair them.
But.
I have never liked the idea. They (any alloy wheel) tend to be brittle, and based on an initial build, and I have no idea if they can ever successfully and safely be restored to original condition.
I'm sure it is possible. But is that what you actually get?
Now, just a little bend? Maybe that could be taken out. With no problem. But will it be?
I know the alloy wheels are preposterously expensive. And that they are not nice and malleable like the steel ones.
But I would just replace it. I have done that before.

I lived in Pittsburgh for years and had numerous pothole encounters in cars and on bikes. I've had cast aluminum motorcycle wheels straightened several times. Theyguy who did mine back when isn't around any more, but there are shops that will work on them. It's one of those things you're not supposed to do, but ......it can be done.

There are enough parts bikes available on the forum and on ebay that a replacement wheel should be drop dead easy.

They can be fixed. Check this guy out. He does a lot of work for people on ADV Rider and has a great reputation.

There are limits as to what can and can not be repaired, and still be cost effective.
Then the shipping cost has to be added in, both ways.

I've had wheels straightened when I could'nt find a used wheel cheap.

If you have time just watch all the usual sourses for used parts. You can find one.

When I layed mine down, the rear wheel was bent. I thought about straightening it for about 5 minutes. Found a rim (with tire) on Ebay for around $200 or $250 (can't remember).

I don't think you'll save any (much?) money getting it straightened, why assume the risk?

How bent is it?

I carefully straightened the flanges on both my front & rear on my R1100RT using a humongous vise & steel/wood plates. They were distorted only about 1/8 inch each, and there was no radial run out. Came out perfect - and no repaint was needed.

If you have radial run out, at least go to a professional, but it may be better to just look for a replacement rim. What ever you do, don't think you can do it with a hammer.......

+1 on Woody he did my Vee-Strom front wheel and it was perfectly straight when I got it back.

I had the front wheel on my last LT straightened by The Frame Man. They've been in business FOREVER and do great work.

Thanks for the replies everyone :wave

From what I've read they use heat and hydraulic rams to straighten the wheel so my concern was HEAT and creating more of an issue but I would trust they know the limits.

Here are a couple pics of the wheel and after looking at them your thoughts are "jackass leave it alone" I would tend to agree.

Mine rims were both bent slightly more, but on one side only. The big vise with proper backing plates & duct tape to protect the finish was all it took. I didn't remove the tire. I can't remember if I even deflated it. It took a lot of the vise's capability. Sorry I have no pictures.

Whatever you do - don't heat it as the aluminum alloy will possibly age harden & get more brittle if you do. Don't use a hydraulic ram unless you have some way to positively control the movement. My big (5 inch?) Polish vise from 35 years ago was ideal.

Bent my front rim on a Monster LA hole. Had it strighten for 125. Beat the heck out of 750 for a new one. It's work perfect ever since.

Bent both of my rims on my old 1150R I had. Rear tire had a bent outer edge, the front tire had a bent outer edge and dent in the dead center of the rim. Both kept air, but after several hundred more miles the front started to go way out of round. New rims were out of the picture, too much money. I found this place, http://www.framestraightsystem.com/
and sent my rims to him after taking tires and rotors off. Work on the rims and shipping both ways way cheaper than replacing one rim. Couldn't tell anything had been wrong with them when I got them back. The farther the dent is from the center of the tire and farther away from a spoke, the easier it is to repair and the best chance of a repair. This guy was nice to talk to and fast turn around time.
