Specifically a '64-'66 283. Rebuilding the one I just blew out of my Jeep Wrangler and wondered what some of these multitude of holes in the block are.
There are 5 in question: 3 on the passenger side, 2 on the driver side. In this photo of the passenger side you can see the three just under the head. 2 are 1/4 X20 and on is 5/16 x 18 ( I think )
I've seen photos of other motors with nothing in these holes, but I can blow air through them. As you can see, I have all the freeze plus and allen head plugs in place, but these little ones are a source of confusion for me.

The 2 with 1/4 x 20 threads are for ignition wire holders. The 5/16 x 18 threaded hole is for a starter bracket that would be used on a factory high torque starter.
