I have several projects I would like to do if I can just nag the wife enough.

Rhinewest
Remus
HID
Driving lights

I can loosen and tighten screws reasonably well, can do most things with someone who knows what they are doing. when it comes to electronics I am inept. How much work for the various projects, and what level of skill needed?

On the HID, do people have them installed in current nacelle (hope that is the right term) or attached elsewhere? Local dealer wants 3 hours to install PIAA driving lights, is that correct?

PolishS,

The lighting and much of the routine maintenance you certainly can do yourself. Read the HOW sections on the topics and get Paul Sayegh's CD's.

http://www.sayegh.org/bmw/service-video.htm

I did the HID and PIAA installs without any difficulty. HID will take a full day or maybe even a weekend if you have not taken the plastic off before. The Kit from HID-Online worked well for me. Ballast goes above the low beam inside of the nose cone and the rest is plug and play. Also need to fabricate and attach a small mounting shelf to even out the surface above the light but it is not difficult.

My dealer only wanted an hour to do the PIAA's but after looking at the kit and learning from this site that I could route the wires through the right side of the front forks without needing to remove any tupperware I did it myself in less than an hour.

I watched a chip and Remus install at CCR and think I would allow an experienced person to do this.

Thanks for the pictures. The link to the page showing the lighting was very informative. Do you use the Micro DE's normally, or only when alone on the road? Same question for the Hella FF50s? I don't ride at night much, but during the winter I commute in the dark and would like to have something that works well, but doesn't blind others.

Actually, I tried them out extensively on the way back up from FL friday night, I got home here at 2:30am so i had plenty of night driving, so here is the details

on the 4 lane divided interstate, i was able to turn them down and in enough to where i did not get flashed from oncoming drivers and still gave plenty of long distance light riding from 78-82mph, i did have to turn them off when coming up on trucks, and traffic, i never got yelled at and thought I had pushed it a couple of times, i then rode most all the way back with them on, and thought they were adjusted much better, and they were, as when i got into the mountains again (ok not much to my house but still it was dark and lonely) I still had plenty of light output, aiming them up just a tad more was really not needed as I originally thought, one thing about the hid's I noticed was in the fog, they really reflect too much light in the fog, you do not want to run them in the fog, at all. way to white of light!

oops I actually forgot about the ff50's,

I was really happy with them, they have a more concentrated beam than the micro de's you can adjust them easier for traffic IMHO

To do it all over again, I would have had the ff50 driving lights mounted a little lower than uinder my mirror's for the simple fact the were right at the height of many rear view mirror's in cars

60 bucks for hella ff50's from motogear4you.com or (how much for the micro de xenon's again? <g>

trust me if you can pull off a set of the xenon lights - do it, they are much much better for night driving them long dark lonely roads <g>

There are several of us in your general area. I'm sure we can manage a tech session. Give a shout when you're ready.
Thanks for the offer. I will order them online and post again when they show up. So how much beer should I plan for?

Thanks again!

Randy,

I don't know where on-line you are ordering but on the off chance you haven't thought of it, make sure to get the kit that has the LT mounting brackets in it.

I am not far from you either and will be glad to assist.

BTW; I bought mine at Irv Seaver for the same price as I could find on-line at the time. If you find them someplace slightly less they will most likely match the price. (No affiliation to Irv Seaver except they own all my disposable income :)

Thanks RMW and JA Townsend. Irv Seaver is who I talked about for the PIAA light kit and brackets. They get them from Dallas Motorcycles according to David Diaz in parts, and have some on order now. David is the one who said install was 2.5-3 hrs? That sounded awfully high to me.
