Had a local body shop paint my side case lids that were scratched up. Called Holts BMW to get a price quote on a pint of #410 Basalt Grey Metallic Glasurit paint, hardener, and clear to the tune of almost $200. The body shop suggested I let them have the PPG rep color spec test and get a code. It came out #400 in the BMW auto line in German of course. Body shop tech said it's a perfect match. Got the lids back and took em into the sun and put the clamshell lid and a rearview mirror next to the lids to compare. The basalt has just a very very minor hint of blue compared to the #400. From ten feet back, they look the same. From 3 feet back you can just barely see the difference.

Options:
1. Buy the Glasurit and make the body shop refund the paint cost and repaint turning this job into a $400 operation.

OR

2. Live with it and hope that some dealer/private buyer down the line penalizes me for slightly different colors on trade in or sale.

Color match

Were you looking for a cheaper alternative to the Glasso or was the B/S? What year is Your bike? Are the parts that you compared the Lids to actually next to each other? The only thing that should matter concerning the color match is that the parts that the lids butt-up to match. You would be very surprised at how bad all of the parts match (don't) from the factory when laying out on the ground next to each other. Did you get what you paid for?

The body shop did a very nice job of refinishing. Per your suggestion, I rough assembled the lids next to the adjacent body work. NO GO....

Thanks for the suggestion.

The "cameras" usually just give blendable colors. Code 410 can be mixed in the Sikkens or Spies brand of color if any of your local shops are using either of these products(usually higher end euro shops) You could always just buy the Glasso basecoat/reducer from Holts and have your guys clear it with whatever they are using but, that still is no guarantee that you will have a perfect butt-match.

Guess I'll have to bite the bullit and get the Glasurit from Holts. Running out of options on the local level.
