Damn!!! Just Getting Ready To Take Off For An 1800 Mile From Fl-va And Back, And I Noticed I Smelled Gas A Bit The Other Day On A Short Ride, And I Now Notice Light Brown 'streaks' On The Gray Plastic Fairing Above My Right Foot. And It Has The Scent Of Gas. By The Angle Of The Streaking, Its Not Coming From The Oil Filler Plug, But Higher Up. I Am Pretty Sure I Even Found A Small Deposit Under The Bike Which Also Smelled A Bit Like Gas. No Work On The Bike Except For An Oil Change And Fd Fluid Change Last Week. Bike Is Way Overdue For It's 24k Changeup. Any Idea What This May Be? Any Idea If Im Nuts To Think About Hitting The Road In 2 Days And Goin For Broke? Its A '03 With About 36k On It. Thanks

This is a common problem with the fuel line quick connects on the right side of the engine. Do a search and you'll find useful information on the repair.

Heres's what you need to fix your issue...

If you don't have time to fool with it before you head out.. Just get some 5/16" straight barbed fuel line couplers from the auto supply and replace the QD's with those..

You'll be fine...

Cheap Plastic BMW crap....This is a very common issue..

The reason I like the Jiffy Tite's over the BMW connectors is because the JT's DO NOT use an O-ring... Eliminates another possible failure mode..

Good Luck

Thanks Folks, Great Input! Next Question.. Im Looking At $130 In Parts And $180 For Labor On This Fix. I Like The Idea Of The Simple Metal Tube Connection Fix With Clamps. Can Anyone Identify What Size And Type Of Metal Fuel Tubing I Would Want To Use Or Is All Fuel Tubing The Same Diameter And Type? Im Assuming I Can Get This At An Auto Parts Store? Thanks Again Folks

5/16 is what you need. And use the smooth FI grade hose clamps 13 -15mm is the size you want. Less than $20 in supplies and a couple of hours to do the job.

In answer to the other question: Yes, I think you should repair this small problem while it still IS a small problem. :) You don't want the trip interruption caused by the QD completely failing, spraying fuel on your right leg/foot, and the potential resulting fire. That would not be a good day.

Sounds like you have what you need and you're ready to dive into it. Good luck, and enjoy your trip.
