Hello,

Been fighting with my bike, 2003 K1200LT, all week. I finally rode it to work yesterday. (I'm starting to miss my Harley and hope I didn't make bad decision)

I think someone messed with the bike and the alarm went off, now I can't start.

I've tried the procedure in the alarm manual, which didn't seem to work at all.

I've also tried some of the procedures I found here in the forums, although I'm not sure where my "programming plug" is. Is this a single wire, or part of the diagnostic port?? anyone have any pics of this? Thanks.

Anyway, not sure what to try next.

I do have the card with the Personal PIN Code, however, there is a sticker on it, so there's two numbers?? but I can't get the LEd to flash the digits as the manual indicates to try either one.

Is the alarm/immobilizer preventing my bike from running? When I turn Key one, sometimes alarm goes off, but all dash lights come one, I can hear fuel pump run, etc. just starter won't crank engine.

Thanks

Thanks

Redbeard

Well this is interesting.

I had to leave the bike at work overnight and catch a ride with a friend.

I came in today, went to the bike to check it, and the headlight was on??? I am positive it was off when I left it last night.

in effort to run headlight off, I put the key in, turned ignition on and then off again, the headlight went out.

Look in the technical section under files. There's some stuff there for an '04 alarm. And you can always remove the system. Heck, I've never used my alarm. An LT is not the most likely theft target anyway.

I probably will remove the alarm system or disable it. I didn't try to turn it on. not sure how it got engaged???

however, first, I have to get it running so I can get it home. it's sitting in parking lot at work. I don't like leaving it sit out here over night. not the greatest neighborhoods.

I don't understand this. Do you mean the alarm sounds or it turns off?
Are you using the fob?

but all dash lights come one, I can hear fuel pump run, etc. just starter won't crank engine.

That could be related to several factors: side stand switch, being in reverse, alarm not turned off...

this is second time my headlight came on unexpectedly.

I don't recall anyone else reporting this, something ain't write.

The picture in your post is the programming port. Follow the instructions in the programming doc. and disable the automatic immobilizer.
This does sound like a bad ignition switch causing most of your problems.

He should also be sure to part it next to his Harley...

The headlight issue is your ignition switch. Alarm is pretty straight forward to bypass but first try setting the alarm with the key off and then see if it will set and then unset. Ribbed button held until turn signals flash, dash led flashing, then smooth button hold until lights flash and dash led goes out. If you get no response hold the fob right under the trunk latch for the best signal to the alarm. If you get it to cycle, then turn on the ignition and press the smooth button and try to start.

Well, I was finally able to get my bike home.

I believe I definitely have a defective ignition switch. probably the root cause of my problems.

I had to connect an external battery with jumper cables.

I then disabled the immobilizer ( turned key on, pressed left button on key fob, then bike started right up)

I left it running until I got it home.

Once I got home, I turned off engine with key switch and removed the key. it turned off as expected. when I got off the bike, the head light and dashlights came back on.

I put the key back in, turned it on and off a couple times with no effect. finally, after several attemps, the headlight went off.

I opened the trunk to retrieve some stuff and the headlight came on again.

I'm convinced that my ignition switch is bad. I'll work on replacing that immediately.

Where's a good place to buy one? how difficult is it to change? (any pointers)

Thanks for all the support and suggestions.

Would this do it for you? Decent price at the boneyard.

K1200LT Upper Fork Bridge W/Ignition Switch & Key

Not sure about difficulty but it looks like you're a smart guy
And it's possible that the switch itself is the same as in some other application, making cheaper sources possible. Maybe someone here knows and can post on it.

Thanks. although it would probably work, if this is a known wear item, I think I'd like to go with a new one.

thank you though!!! I appreciate it!

You may just have a dirty switch so you can do the first part below and see if a bit of lube will help. Other wise it is pretty straight forward. Switch PN is 61 32 2 305 773 and it is $135 from BMW. The whole switch/housing/key is $162 but you have to drill out two one way screws to get it off and it is hard to get to those screws. You only have to pull the tank if you are going to replace the switch as the electrical box is under the tank.

Well, it's a year down the road since you had your problem and, whatever it was, I'm sure it's fixed now. I made a bet as I read the thread that it was a wire loose or somehow making contact via missing insulation or something. Gotta know...whuhappen?

Also, I'm trying to set my brand new (to me) 2003 alarm system to mode "B"...not quite ready to actually give it a hysterectomy yet...and I've been trying to find that %^$#% connector myself. No luck yet.

It surprises me that it took 4 responses before someone actually confirmed to you what the %^$#% connector looked like. Near as I can tell, you can't do anything except cutting it all out without it.

I dunno if I've looked at the specific threads they pointed to but I have looked at a gazillion (it seems) others and none of them gave a description or pic of the %^$#% connector. Thanks to patroa1 for cutting directly to the chase!!

So, now that I know what exactly I'm looking for, maybe I'll have some luck finding it!!! Wish me well.
