there is a quicker way by just removing enough to raise and prop the tank and left upper fairing.
Disconnect the wiring as needed and work out the filter. Takes me about 45 minutes start to finish but I ALWAYS find other stuff to play with while inside!
You might as well change the fuel filter while changing the air filter. Do it all while you are there. It took me about 4 hours from start to finish. About 50 screws to remove and replace. But you'll have months of riding before you have to do it again........
I would have to say the BMW schedule for the air filter replacement every 12K miles might be a little over kill. From my experience under normal riding conditions you could at least double this interval before the air filter change. This is just my opinion and I'm sure someone will question it. After 12K highway miles, which is the only place you can ride this bike it will look like a brand new air filter. Bright light inspection, blowing it out whatever method you use it will be good. (unless you have K&N)
I also think the spark plug replacement schedule every 12K is overkill. It doesn't hurt to look at the plugs every 12K (if you want) but unless you are having some problems the plugs should be fine. I know you might find a problem.
It looks like the manufacturers (not Just BMW) are giving the dealers something to do when you come in for mileage checks. (if you take it to the dealer)
Just one man's opinion. Check as often as you like.
I don't know the year of your bike, but there a several things you can do when you go after your air filter.
1. Put real clamps on the fuel pump assembly and change out your fuel lines and fuel filter.
2. Replace plastic quick disconnects with metal disconnects.
3. Check your crankcase breather hose to see if it is leaking (cracks by the intake manifold).
4. Disconnect every electrical connection you come across and fill it with dielectric grease.
5. Clean and grease shift linkage (I do this with every oil change).
Previous owner replaced air filter at 11K. I did the fuel filter and air filter at 30K and the air filter looked like the new one. Someone on the forum suggested changing the air or fuel filter only if the motor acted like it was short of air or fuel at top revs. Makes sense to me. I am just hitting 50K and I haven't revisited either filter yet.
I change the air filters on my vehicles at 40000 mile intervals which seems to work pretty consistently for my area and degree of filter contamination.
I keep good fuel mileage records and don't plan on changing plugs or filters until I see a change from normal indicating it is time.
Some thing to muse over........I have a 2001 Corolla that I bought new and now has nearly 300000miles on it. I have Never changed the fuel filter and it has never given any indication it is restricting. I could have changed it 5 or 6 times for nothing by now.
I'm waiting for my fuel pump and quick disconnects. Should be here Monday. I broke one of the plastic ones while taking the tank on and off. The air filter was dirty when I took it out but it might have been the original. I have no way of knowing. The fuel filter might have been original as well. The hoses showed signs of cracking on the outside so I'm changing all of it as well as the plugs. I'm hoping I won't have to do this again for a long time. I guess to finish it off I should change the coolant as well..............
I had to recently replace my brake lines and decided to change the filter. Great way to really get to know the bike and even greater amount of self satisfaction. All the money Gina I saved will go into farkles forthwith new RT.
I changed my air filter at 24K. Could hardly tell it had been used. I admit I do live on the green side of Washington State. My brothers on the brown side of the state would likely have a different experience. Especially in the Tri-Cities area where the wind only blows sand about 300 days a year.
