Okay guys...Just purchased an 03 LT with 13K...I've never even ridden an LT, but now I own one (well, as of 3/16 anyway)...I usually discard whatever the sales people tell me about the bike and go to the real knowlegeable people: LT Riders......So what should I look out for? I know all bikes have their quirks but know very little about the LT...I've ridden Goldwings and ST's and RT's and cruisers but this is a totally different animal for me....I basically bought it for touring 2 up with the SO and I've heard it was great for that...any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.....thanks, LSD :bmw:

Try to find out if the bike has had the 12,000 mile service. Important to have the brake system flushed, at least every 2 years. Big weight difference; almost 900 pounds w/a full tank of gas. May want to consider putting HID in, as well as some good running lites such as Moto Light.

Congratulations and welcome. You can probably search the forum for "new owner" or "newby" and find loads of advice. You sound like an experienced rider so moving to an LT should not be too big of a deal.

The two primary issues for a new owner are low speed handling and how to keep it from falling over when using the side stand. Above about 5 MPH the LT is a dream to ride. It is as smooth and comfortable to ride as any touring machine out there, most here would say better than anything else, with near sport touring riding characteristics. It is a little top heavy and not exactly flickable but it carves corners better that any touring or cruiser class bike out there and probably would give a number of sport touring bikes a run for their money.

Below 5 MPH the high center of gravity starts to get your attention. After a few thousand miles I really didn't notice it that much any more but at 6' 2" and 230 pounds I can usually muscle through any errors in low speed technique that I may make, hypothetically speaking of course ;). So if you are inseam challenged or riding two up pay particular attention. The basic advice for low speed or stopping maneuvers, as in when you get below 5-10 MPH, is to keep your head up and use your rear brake if you are not travelling in a strait line.

The falling off the side stand issue is easy to avoid if you don't let past experience with other motorcycles get in the way. Always leave the bike in gear if you are using the side stand. The best procedure is put the bike in gear, push it forward until the engine compression stops you, make sure the side stand is all the way forward then put it over onto the side stand. If there is ever a chance your rider will try to move your LT make sure they know how to do it, otherwise do it yourself. If using the front brake to stop with the front wheel turned doesn't put your LT down then forgetting this little procedure will.

Otherwise it's like getting on any new motorcycle. Ride it a little easy to start with and practice low speed maneuvers until it feels right. Oh by the way, the third most common advice, actually it is probably the most common advice, is to ride it like you stole it :D.

Watch out during low speed maneuvers and when coming to a stop keep the front wheel straight and try using the rear brake only.

Other than that enjoy the best touring bike!!!;)

Don't know about you ... but if I stole a bike I would ride it slowly, carefully, obey all traffic laws, and try to be unconspicuous!!!;) :D

I pretty new to the LT world as well - I also have an 03. Some of the things I've learned in the past couple of months
- crank up your rear shock when riding 2 up
- the plastic rattle you hear from the front when taking off is normal
- put a guard on your headlight they retail for over 400 buck and cost alot to have installed.
- most anything ya need to know or fix can be found on this board if ya look.
- if ya can't find it someone will know the answer

Welcome Larry to our little group of maniacs !

Things to learn. Never, Never stop with the front end turned...If you do.. use rear brake only for the last few feet... The Lt has a different kind of suspension and it doesn't dive like other bikes do so if you have the front end turned and grab a handfull of front brake that energy is all going to go somewhere and send the LT straight into the ground. If it starts going over, Don't try to stop it.. It's well protected for just falling over. You'll hurt yourself if you try to catch it...Learn to pick it up correctly. There's a video in the faq's for this.. Give it a look. You'll hurt yourself it you try to pic it up incorrectly....

They have a few little noises they make, Theyre all normal. Just ask about them as you notice them. The rear brakes squeal like a banshee sometimes...getting aftermarket pads helps..They have a vibration at around 4000 rpm.. that's the exhaust system harmonic... goose it up to 5000 and don't worry about it. It makes all of it's power above 3000 rpm so you kind of have to drive it like it's a racing bike, sorry. :) You can putt it around also. But all the fun's in the hi revs.:D It's built to go all the way to the red.!!

Make sure you wear boots with grippy soles and good ankle support EVERY time you get on the bike. I have lost count of the number of times that my boots have saved me from dropping the bike.

absolutely read the posts about the LT falling off the sidestand. it can do some real damage to a vehicle or a leg or a kid or a wife. Not to mention that sick feeling when you hear that big ol' machine hitting the ground.

also tether the mirrors. of yeah... the biggest adjustment for me when switching from the wing to the LT was getting used to the odd placement of the mirrors. I always feel like my fists are right in the blind spots. takes some getting used to.

Remus exhaust with chip. You can buy here on this site. Worth the $$$$. Best aftermarket farkle I every bought.

Second is a trickle charger, never a dead battery.

Do not think your motor has blown up if it smokes after being on side stand for a while (it is normal). If you ride with any Goldwingers be sure to always put bike on center stand so it will not smoke, trust me it will save you from some off the wall remarks, I know from experience. Ride Safe and welcome aboard.

Thanks for all your replies...Some excellent advice and I appreciate it. Nothing like getting the REAL information from those who know......of course I'm now paranoid about the "don't stop with the front wheel turned and front brakes applied" syndrome....rode many goldwings and never noticed a problem. Then again, this is not a goldwing. Anyhow, I'm getting the bike tomorrow (Thursday) and after I put a few miles on it I'll let you know what I think. Once again, thanks for the response and I truly appreciate your advice.....lsd[/B]

Very true, a 'Wing this isn't. Don't be paranoid about it, just be aware and train yourself to respect the big beast and you'll be fine. All bikes have their quirks.

Just remember, the same suspension geometry that's touchy at real low speeds means the LT handles like it's on rails at normal to high speed. Guess which benefit I'd rather choose. :)

I would like to modify that statement:
Always leave the bike in FIRST gear if you are using the side stand.

It will have progressively less holding power as the gears go up, to practically NO holding in 5th.

A good point Dave. If my bike is stopped it is always in first gear so in essance that is exactly what I do. I just didn't mention it.

John, you mention a video on demonstrating the procedure for picking up the LT. How does one access that video?
