Hi, I bought a 99 K1200LT and in planning for the first oil change I will do, any suggestions for motor oil (Will Shell Rotella T-6 5W-40 fit the bill?), what is a good oil filter and what is the suggested (not BMW) oil weight and brand for the FD service?

Thanks, Jim

Popeye likes Olive Oil.

Okay...
my 2000 has had a diet of WalMart SuperTech gear oil in the final drive.
A variety of synthetics in the tranny: shifts better with synth...

I've used Mobil 1 in the crankcase, but also plain old petro lube.
There is no evidence that the final drive will do better with synthetic.
The tranny shifts better with synth.

The crankcase... well, take your pick. Maybe the starter sprag clutch is more likely to gum up with dino... not sure about that.

I just change it on schedule.

For filters and other service parts I go to BMW motorcycle parts, BMW motorcycle, Used BMW motorcycle parts, BMW motorcycle salvage . Great prices and service. For oil, I use a good quality standard oil in 20W50 with the correct rating (API SF, SG, or SH) for the motor. You do not need the motorcycle specific oil as that is designed for bikes that have "wet" clutches and require the extra additives. Our bikes use a "dry" clutch just like a car. The oil in the engine is like the oil in any other engine. You can use synthetic but I prefer to change oil a little more frequently and still save money.

I was informed by jzeller mechanic extraordinaire that he only used Mobile One as it contained the highest level of zinc and this is an old style engine that has a valve train that likes zinc. Good enough for me to switch to that on my next oil change.

I use 20W50 as it meets the temp ranges i ride in. 14F up to over 100F
