2021 RT ACC (Radar/Distance) Stopped working

12731 Views 84 Replies 22 Participants Last post by  speedtoys.racing
Was riding and got this on the display and thought I would share so if it happens to someone else:
Hood Motor vehicle Light Automotive design Automotive tire

Acknowledged message but alert symbol on right side wouldn't go away. Normal cruise still worked but no ACC available. Stopped for gas and down the road still no ACC and message came back again. When I got home I saw that a bug had figured out if he sacrificed himself on the ACC sensor then he could disable this capability! Cleaned his remains (and some of his buddies) off the front and it works fine now. Hope this helps a fellow 21 RT rider in the future.

Been following this post with interest as I had the same ACC drop out a few months ago (early Augsut) - dropping out and then returning to normal after a short power down (e.g. fuel stop) then failing again after a few hundred KM.
Took the bike into the dealer and they re-installed the software and then carried out the callibration ride. The system worked fine for a couple of months and failed again about 5 times on a 1700km, 3 day ride this last weekend. only difference this time is that the system seemed to correct itself (i.e. fault symbol dissappeared and could switch ACC back on) without having to power the bike down at all - sorted while riding.
So I am again waiting to talk to the tech at the dealer as the calibration process is obviously NOT the fix - and it appears that no-one else had been provided a resolution?
Will advise if I find anything new to add to the discussion when I speak to the dealer later in the week.

So far, I have been very lucky in that it had only happened just the one time, and I have ridden several 1,000 miles since that occurrence. As for self-correcting, that was the case with me. It corrected itself, but only after something like 15 minutes after it had faulted out. Therefore, when you had experienced it the first time, if you had not stop, you probably will find that it would have also restored itself.

Here is what I had reported earlier on:

. . . . .

On the radar, and this is just for the record - while I was on the BRP a couple of weeks back, I had gotten the same window alert, as the cruise control dropped out! I tried to re-engage the cruise control, even without the radar being active, but it failed to do that. I also had the yellow triangle "!" alert on the very right of my dash. I rode on without using the cruise control. About 15 minutes later, I noticed that the "!" alert icon had disappeared, and so tried the cruise again. This time it did engage, with radar and all! That was almost 2,000 miles ago, and it hadn't occurred again. So, when I got back home, I just report the event to my dealer to pass on to BMW.
So far, I have been very lucky in that it had only happened just the one time, and I have ridden several 1,000 miles since that occurrence. As for self-correcting, that was the case with me. Didn't even start doing this till about 5,000 miles and did it once. Then at about 9,000 miles became more frequent (dealer did calibration which didn't fix it) with no rhyme or reason. Sometimes it does it and will return with each new start even over a couple of days. Sometimes it fixes itself and others after a break and the next power up. Just like this weekend, about 100 miles into the trip it failed (distance was even off) and then about 50 miles later after a break it came right back. Then about 30 miles later it fixed itself and worked the rest of the day (about 200 more miles). Then on the 350 mile return trip it worked fine the whole time. I take it to the dealer tomorrow to leave it with them and I hope they figure it out.
if you had not stop, you probably will find that it would have also restored itself.of my occurances
Thanks for that. Both of my occurrences happened within minutes of a planned stop, so the system never had a chance to restore before the bike was turned off.

Interesting article , seems ABS is actually the ACC master.
I have been a Audi tech for 30 + years. Audi came out with ACC in 2004 on their A8. So I have some ACC experience. The early ones would randomly stop working. Turns out the system would shutdown if the radar detected nothing in front of for extended periods of time. The ACC was programmed that way. Part of its fault diagnosis. We were never told what that time period was. I suspect that was lawyer driven. ACC would only come back on with a key cycle. Key cycle would trigger a self test. Had a customer that did a lot of North Dakota night driving. Drove him nuts.
Anyway. To help BMW diagnose the issue. Try and note under what conditions it shuts off. I be curious if coronering has anything to do with it or type of vehicles in front.
Widgets are great when they work , east to fix when they just fail and drive everyone one involved NUTS when the fail very intermittent.

Happy trails 😀

Maybe we need jackets with radar reflective material to increase our signature.
Be safe out there.

Interesting experience with the technology. I was looking at it through the same glasses (elevator tech here) for the same reason, find the common ground for failure. Both my instances were on straight roads with no traffic in the front.

Would be great if the other guys experiencing failure would remember the circumstances.
For me, that was on the Blue Ridge Parkway, moderately winding road. When the radar went out, I had no traffic in front of me, and most likely hadn't had any in front for a while.
Sad that this is happening so soon after the release of the bike. ACC is not new tech and implementing on a motorcycle reliably should be easy as it been on cars for well over a decade. Heck, it's been on mainstream cars for quite sometime. I've had it on three cars (Mazdas) over the years and it's never once given me any trouble. Yes, I did knock on wood 😁
I'm new to this feature but I can't help but wonder how it works. I noticed on any road (corners, straight etc.) it only notices vehicles in front (as opposed to those parked on the side of the road or coming in the other direction!!)
Although at one point a car was moving to the left lane and it slowed quickly. They were about 90% out of the lane and say 3 cars ahead.
Hope it keeps working without the bugs!!

The system is looking for moving objects. It will still run you into a wall so it is not a rider replacement tool, simply controlled following of a moving object in the front of you IN THE SAME direction as you are travelling. Same as the old fashioned cruise control that only does fixed speed just add on the top fixed distance too. It can get confused by next lane traffic, exactly as you experienced. The braking though will not through you over the handle bars. The "enthusiasm" can be set to two different levels.

Yes it was a very minor braking. Where is that setting?
Still amazing..and I don't trust it for a second!!o_O

Sorry, don't remember it. It will be under system settings somewhere. I came across it while exploring the options but never changed it as I was happy how it works for me. Plus I got the bike since the 19th of May so it's been a while I looked it up. Go explore it ;) you can always back out of an option without changing it.

I felt the same way with my first car that had it. My foot hasn't stopped hovering around the brake pedal for a few hundred kilometres until I learnt to trust the system. It does not replace driver attention but it helps remove some of the pain in the ass parts, such as adjusting your speed constantly to the numb nut in the front of you who cannot keep a steady speed to save his life...

Just picked the bike up and 150 miles back to the house. They updated the software ( 012.007.030 ) and the service guy said 5 modules were updated but didn't know if that was part of .030 or just while it was hooked up to the computer. He also said they have no idea what is in the updates as BMW tells them nothing too. He didn't even know about the programmable favorites buttons in this load. Thanks to this Forum I was able to show him that. BMW said do updates then calibrate radar take it for the test ride to complete the calibration and then repeat the calibration process. He said the information was sent to the Mothership. He even told me in his Tech Request that they asked for more help from BMW on the new things on this bike as they have no experience with it. Now to see if it is fixed, only miles will tell.

OK... I didn't know that, where's the post please sir?

Ah..I have the 11_07 version not the 12_07. Oh well, life goes on, would be nice to assign one to reset the trip computer.

Did you know the second trip computer can be set to auto reset if you don't ride for 6 hours and/or some distance? I zero the first trip computer manually at the bike's service, then have the second trip computer on auto reset This way I have an average consumption and accumulated times (riding and not riding) since last service and an up to date short term trip meter that needs no buttons.
I came to love it and use it like this now permanently.

I'm not sure if the reset function is even an option for the favourite buttons. I wasn't looking very hard though, I had my ideas ready by the time the bike rolled out off the dealer's computer, so went straight for those.

You certainly can set a favourite button to reset the trip. I find it a very useful option. Cheers.

@sixty does it just reset trip mileage or also fuel consumption? I haven't tried it yet.

Yeah I knew that but I want something I reset at each gas stop so I keep track of my miles-per-tank. It's a slight hassle to navigate to the onboard computer to reset the trip 1 items. I can live with it as I can do it after leaving a gas stop but a simple button push would be nice.

I'll get that functionality eventually, but may wait until a few more software updates have been pushed to minimize any dealership visits and I can live with it if future updates aren't all that big of a deal anyway.
