Hello to all, I have a new to me 1999 Lt and was thinking about putting an ecu from a 2005 in my bike.
Is it a plug and play or do I need to change other things to make it work, the goal is more HP.

Doug, you can only get so much blood from a stone or a brick in this case. One reason the 05 lists more HP is a compression increase so simply putting an 05 ECU on a 99 bike is probably not going to really buy you much in that respect. If you want a little more performance, you can investigate Johns Tuning chip for your current ECU. You may need to get a different model ECU but read through this thread and there is also an ebay link to his store there. If you want to go ahead, contact him and let him know what you have so you get the correct chip for your ECU.

I put in my '99 model John's chip stage 9 with a newer ECU from Bosch starting with a 7 instead of the older one (4). Works fine, more torque and a significant better MPG. It's a cheap way to get more drivingfun out of the LT.

Thank you for adding your experience.... BUT part of your message could be interpreted wrongly by the OP who asked the question as you cannot use any/all Motronic unit from any/all K1200LT years.

The important facts missing are:
(1) early 1999-2000 models of the K1200LT came with a Motronic EFI unit which part number ended with "1 465 194". These early EFI main unit cannot be chipped (opening unit and swapping the chip)

(2) ALL later Motronic EFI units had a part number with a "7" instead of the "1" in position stated above. These can be chipped IF-AND-ONLY-IF you have proper chip for 1st generation engine model (1999-2004) ...OR... proper chip for 2nd generation engine (2005-2009) depending on your bike. You should NOT mix-match computer units for both generation as intake size, compression, camshafts are not the same.

(3) In case you have the early unit (1 465 194) you could buy a used Motronic Units that can fit a 1st generation ENGINE of K1200LT. These are EITHER: "7 655 478" , "7 659 048' , "7 656 984". Once you have a "7" number unit, then you could buy a 3rd party replacement chip. I do NOT endorse or sell any of these 3rd party chip... I am only stating what you need to check before you install these on an early 1999-2000 models.


In order to check what Motronic version you have on your K1200LT, you may use either of these 3 methods:
(A) Remove unit from under fuel-tank to read label on unit (see attached photo),
(B) use a GS911 with "Auto-Scan" menu to read data from unit,
(C) have dealer use his diagnostic computer to read data from unit.

Thanks so much for the info, I will check my ECU and replace it with the a "7 655 478" , "7 659 048' , "7 656 984". Better low end torque is what I would like the most. There have been some mods to my bike
lower foot pegs, heated seats with bad cable splice job hookup, trunk rack with a brake light, the last owner may have messed with the ECU. I love exploring my new to me bike.

Today I changed my EFI back to stock :serious:. The difference Sailor mentions in the intake, compression and camshafts gave my some uncertainties.
