Just picked up a 2000 K1200lt, trailered it back from New York, started fine there. Battery was near dead when I got home and would not start. I hookked a trickle charger to the battery and it went full amps for a short time they shut off and cycled on and off. Turn the key on the bike no power at all. When I hook the charger to the battery I can hear a humming under the bike in the reverse switch if I were to guess. I charged the battery up out of the bike and hooked it back up it arced when I hooked positive up. Any suggestions?

The first thing I would do is connect a voltmeter and see how much the volts drop under a load. Who knows how old that battery is or how it was maintained

I would agree with the previous poster...it started okay...now it's not. Sounds like a battery issue. The LT is real picky about her battery...make sure it is in good condition.

I agree with the above posts, check the voltage. In addition, You may have already checked these but.........

Kill Switch?
Is it in gear?
Reverse switch in NORMAL?
Check fuses?
Alarm may be activated since battery was out.

It is normal to see a small arc when reconnecting the battery. That indicates that things that are normally powered, are functioning. Clock, radio memory, abs. etc. However, if it was a big arc, you got something else shorted out. BTW, I always connect the POSITIVE cables first then connect the NEGATIVE, it is safer that way IMHO.

Everything right what was said above but you should check all ends of the Battery connectors also minus to the frame. Is always the same, bad or loose connection.

Thanks for the info it was battery related. Apparently the 99 and 00 LT's have an issue when battery is weak when starting and battery near death. It engages the starter and stays in that poisition which is why I had the problems I did. Friend has a BMW mechanic buddy that diagnosed it over texts. See steps below for the fix
1. Fully charge new battery
2. hook up positive side only
3. turn key to on position
4. start pressing the starter button fast (man time)
5. while doing step 4 connect negatige on battery

This caused the solenoid to kick the starter back to normal position IE not the short out position.

I did the above steps and bike fire right up and is functioning properly now.

That was the short term fix. The contacts in the starter relay have been damaged now and will fail again much easier. Plan to replace the relay. It will bite you again.
