Bought this bike with the Xenon headlight not working (replacement on order) and dash lights would not go off. Stripped it down to find aftermarket brake strobe lights installed, blown 4 amp fuse on 2nd fuse box but no other frayed wires that I can see. Ground connections are good but when I replace the 4 amp fuse I get all of the dash lights on irrespective of what position the key is in. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

If you are referring to the instrumentation back lights on the dash, a quick look at the schematic shows them connected to the onboard computer. Fuse 15 box 2 looks like an always hot link to the OBC and Fuse 14 looks like a switched feed to the OBC. I am only guessing here but if F15 is the one that was blown and now replaced and you pull F14 and the lights continue to stay on, I would suspect the OBC as being faulty or some issue in the wiring that provides the switched 12V to it through F14. Check to make sure that F14 goes on and off with the key with a meter. If it does, look into the OBC as possibly being faulty.

I am not intimately familiar with this and only making suggestions to try and isolate the issue based on what I see on the schematic. Someone else may have first hand knowledge on the dash lights and how they function to help you further.

Unless you have already done it, my first step would be to remove the aftermarket brake strobe entirely to see if that solves your issues.

Brake strobe thingy removed! Other than the top led light on the trunk now coming on as it should (before it was not working), this has not effected the dash light issue.

I will have to see what the replacement headlight will do to resolve the issue.

I'm also not sure why the OBC makes a ticking noise that goes away when the engine is started. Is this normal?

The fact that the headlight is not functioning is also preventing, in my opinion, the ABS lights from coming on.

Being that the LT is a non CAN-BUS bike, the headlight should come on as soon as you turn the key on. Check to see if you are getting voltage to the headlight connector plug.
Just to clarify, not that it matters with year, the title of your thread is "07....", in your signature line, you have "2006..." LT.

Yes, just getting back into bikes after selling the 06 LT and 03 GS. Still have to figure out how to update my signature as this site is a little different then what I remembered, and cumbersome...

Regarding CANBUS, not sure if I do or do not have CANBUS, how do I tell? I thought a dead give away was the thinner electrical wires used indicating CANBUS.

The LT does NOT have a canbus electrical system.

13 volts at the headlight connector plug.

Still puzzled as to why the top right 4amp fuse position on #2 box witch is allways live, turns on dash when fuse is replaced even though key is off.

Once you install the replacement headlamp, that will at least take care of one issue. As others have said, either disconnect or remove completely amy non bmw installed device, and start fresh. Good luck!

Which fuse are you referring too? I don't have the 2 box setup on the 05 so I can't go look.

It is #7 on box 2 in your picture. It is indicated as the terminal 30 (not sure what that means), instrument panel, and control unit for EHCS. I have tested this to reveal this is allways live but when fuse is replaced it is as if you have turned the key to the on position. Makes no sense.

I also see that the tail light has an extra yellow where connecting one bulb to the center bulb. Removing this connection does not allow the center brake light to come on when applying brakes.

Thanks Gordon, will check that. Seems odd that everything else, apart from the non working headlight and one blown parking light, works fine. The dash lights show a fault which I attribute to these bulbs not working.

Mine is an 07 (still trying to figure out where I can update my signature on this site) but should be the same as an 06. Are you using the Clymer manual schematics?

Yes I am. Listed as 06 on.

Sig is updated under tools >> user CP from the top menu. Edit Signature in left sidebar.

#6 is not hot with key off and dash, other than center display, goes off with key off. Low fuel indicator, temp, and distance to empty all work fine.

Well, without anything else to go on, I would take a look at the OBC as the cause. I would suspect that whatever electronics are inside use the signal from #6 to turn on the lights. No idea id that is transistor driven and it has gone bad or relay driven and it is stuck.

Not sure if it all stems from the headlight and one parking light being out. Will replace those and continue searching.

Would be good to know if the tail lights require the bulb to bulb connection or was that part of the brake strobe connection.

The center rear brake light bulb needs to be in place and can't be an LED without added resistors. This bulb is fed by the ABS controller. The others are fed by a relay and they can all be removed or burnt out with no indication of an issue. Just the center bulb is monitored. All the other lights are not associated with the OBC where the dash lights are shown to connect.
