Question K12LT Hannigan brake reservoir

Had my K12 converted, in Jan'09. Am glad I did. It is just the ticket for my riding with wife trips.

I guess I didn't ask enough questions, when I took delivery.

I tried to check/fill the rear brake reservoir, this morning, and could not find a way to get the cap off!! Other than having a neighborhood 10 year old, with small hands, and mechanical abilities, do the job, how is this done???

The bike stops fine. I am trying to alleviate an ABS light that comes on randomly and have heard that low fluid level may cause this.

thanks bwb

Re: K12LT Hannigan brake reservoir

It would be helpful to know the year of the LT. That way we can point you to the correct reservoir. Not all of them are montiored for fluid level and the location varies from year to year.

Re: K12LT Hannigan brake reservoir

It is a 1999. Rear brake reservoir is located right side, outside of frame rail, under bodywork, near the front of the passenger seat. Passenger seat must be removed to access the reservoir. In stock configuration, there is room to reach in to hold the body of the reservoir, while removing the lid, to add fluid.

The Hannigan modification adds sub-frame structure in that area that takes up much of the access space previously available.

I can get to the lid, but any attempts to turn it, results in an equal movement of the reservoir as well. I am seeking secrets, or tricks, learned by others who have managed to maintain proper level in their brake systems.

I will continue to seek a solution. It may be as simple as finding two small strap wrenches, one to hold the reservoir, and one to turn the lid. We shall see.

thanks bwb

Re: K12LT Hannigan brake reservoir

Ok. On the 99 model NONE of the reservoirs are monitored so that is not the cause of your lights. Most often it is a low battery or a wheel sensor. The worst case is the infamous piston fault which is the ABS unit itself. Best to find some one nearby with a GS-911 code reader (there is a registry of owners in the Bike Talk forum) to see what the stored faults are or take it to the dealer.

Too bad they didn't move the reservoir to a more accessible place.
