AZ 191 loop in 1 day?

Has anyone ridden the loop up 87 to Jakes Corner, then down 188/70 to Clifton and up the 191 to Springerville and back around thru Show Low and Payson in 1 day?

Most seem to break this into a 2 day ride.

I mapped it out from door to door is a little over 600 miles, which in my mind very doable, but I've never ridden the 191 so don't know what it does to average speed. I'd be riding by myself, which helps keeps things on pace.

I'm thinking of doing this on Friday (10//21), so any comments would be appreciated!

Re: AZ 191 loop in 1 day?

It is doable, I know some who have, but it is a long, long day unlike pounding out 600+ miles on the super slabs. I have chosen to do it in two day's, riding to and staying the night in Alpine, then the next day riding 180 into New Mexico and following 180 south along the NM/AZ border to 78 east back into AZ and 191 north. Makes for a nice ride and 180 is also worth doing.

I would be up for a one day ride but not this weekend. Got a two day show in Scottsdale so I kind of have to show up.

Let us know how it works and don't forget the photos....

Why am I here and what day is it??

Get an early start Scott and it's not a problem. I did it not long after the fires to check the damage. We had a large group plus a long lunch in Alpine yet still made it home before dark. (Of course it gets dark much earlier right now than when we did it a few months ago.)

Anyway, go for it and have fun!

The days are shorter now, but should be doable. Keep in mind that the early morning and evenings will be damm cold up at the higher elevations.

Thanks for the advice. My dog sitter couldn't cover today, so I had to alter my plans. Went up to Bagdad instead. I still plan on doing this 191 loop - soon!

Re: AZ 191 loop in 1 day?

I've always done it as a 1-day ride. However I've never done it on an LT, just sport bikes. Asking this question is like asking whether Asparagus tastes good; everyone has a different answer and none really match your preferences specifically.

All I can say is "what's the rush?" AZ 191 north of Clifton has some of the finest twisties in America. Enjoy!
