Rides in the Phoenix AZ area?

Fellow Riders

Can we start planning some one or two day rides for those of us in the Phoenix area? With the weather cooling off soon, it will be time to get back to riding and exploring.

Any Ideas?

Re: Rides in the Phoenix AZ area?

Excellent idea. If you want to wait for the temps to cool down you are looking at end of September or October. I might suggest a ride to and up Mount Lemmon in Tucson, via the back way rather than I-10.

Re: Rides in the Phoenix AZ area?

Would love to do 191 again before the snow flies and they close the road. Or Payson to Lake Mary to Sedona to Jerome over Mingus to Prescott valley and down Yarnell.

We found a great B and B just outside of the Chiricahua Mountains. Lots of roads to explore in that part of the state.

Hell, lets just get out and ride!!

Why am I here and what day is it??

Re: Rides in the Phoenix AZ area?

Well,

As you might have guessed, my big brother does love to do the long rides and rack up the miles.

For me?, I am out of town for the holiday weekend, so my first chance to ride will be Sept 10-11.

Any takers for a Yarnell Hill/ Prescott/Jerome ride?

Re: Rides in the Phoenix AZ area?

I game, but I've got the bike torn apart a bit - swapping out the GTL rack for a GT rack which brings the top box in about an inch closer. And I'm having the seat done by Ron (KonTour) down in Tucson, so I'm not sure when I can join. If it is a shorter ride, I can take the R1200R.

Can't wait for the temps to break.... it's hard to even tinker with the bikes in the garage, let alone get some rides in....

Leaving out of Phoenix Az.

Should be a fun ride. Going to stay with friends most of the way. Going to try out the new russell saddle and give the Lt a proper long ride.

After doing this ride on a GS with a stock seat I am really looking forward to this ride!!

Why am I here and what day is it??

Hmmmm...

Seems like it might be a bit early with peoples plans and temps still in the 100's. Will do what we can in Sept, but we really ought to plan something for Oct.

Howdy Yetters,
AZBeemers club is planning this ride for Sept 11. We will work out final details in a week or so, but generally this will be it. Probably eat at Diablo Burger in Flagstaff, but open to other ideas.

Here is the posting from our club site

September 11, Sunday all day ride

Kickstands up 7:30am, Carefree Highway gas station just east of I17.

Day ride the long way up to Flagstaff via Jerome, Sedona, Oak Creek Canyon. Return route TBD depending on time and participation. Well iron this out before we leave so you will know in advance.

No need to be a club member to join, this is for anyone who wants to ride. Don't know how many will go, but I am!

Cheers,
Steve

Hey Dan,
Welcome and congrats on the LT! There's a wealth of information, help and opinion here on the forum - worth supporting as it is advertising-free.

Looking forward to meeting you on an upcoming ride as the heat (hopefully) starts to abate.

The club ride will likely be a small group (maybe just me!) as many are headed over to Sipapu for the rally there.

I'll post up the final details (open to discussion at meet-up) in a day or two.

Come on out, we'll have a nice ride.

Re: Rides in the Phoenix AZ area?

Details for this sunday ride:

September 11, Sunday all day ride

Kickstands up 7:30am, Carefree Highway gas station just east of I17.

Proposed route through Wickenburg, up the hill, Kirkland Junction then into Prescott. We'll make our way to Jerome, then on to Sedona. (We may stop for an ice tea or something in Jerome. Open to ideas.)

From Sedona, up Oak Creek Canyon to Flagstaff. Lunch suggestions (open to others):
Diablo Burger http://www.diabloburger.com/Diablo_B...enu.041111.pdf
(Note: Diablo burger does not take credit cards, they say because banks don't sell cheese burgers!)

or

Mama Burger
http://www.themamaburger.com/menu
(They do take credit cards.)

We can also park in old town and there are many nice places we can try. I know a good place to park.

From Flagstaff, with full bellies, we'll take Lake Mary Road and head back via Happy Jack and Payson.

Should be a 400ish miler, and the valley temps are supposed to be somewhat cooler for the return!

My pace will be casual. Others can choose their own pace and we'll plan some stops to regroup if so desired.

Hope you can make it!

Re: Rides in the Phoenix AZ area?

Dan,
Nice meeting you and your son as well. It's a nice set up that GoAZ is doing - the burger was pretty good, the band wan't bad, and the price was right!

I'm sure we'll connect again on an upcoming ride - there are a lot of active riders here on the forum as well as other BMW riding groups in the valley.

Enjoy your LT and the forum - a great place to hang out when we're not out riding!

Re: Rides in the Phoenix AZ area?

Mr. Breeze,
I had hoped to get up there last night but was stuck with some late work stuff. Will try to go to another one though!

Everyone,
Just wanted everyone to know that Sunday's ride to Flag is on, light rain or shine. Torrential downpour with little hope of relief and I will post up a cancellation notice here by 6:15am sun. Otherwise, assume its a go.

Also, for the record, even though this is an AZBeemers club ride, everyone is welcome and there is no expectation or pressure to join the club. Just come ride!

Hope to meet some of you out there!

Re: Rides in the Phoenix AZ area?

OK,

So i did not make the ride, had too much house stuff to be there on time. Instead, made my own ride. Up 17 to Cordes, Prescott, Wilhoit, Yarnell, Wickenburg and the back home. Only 225 miles but it gave me time to get to know the new steed.

1) It's ok from 60-70 mph
2) It's a lot better at 80 mph
3) It's a blast at 90mph.
4) And for all the fun with the speed?, it's friggin amazing in the twisties.

I am in love with riding, all over again.

We had a good ride today. About 425 miles (for me). Ended up having lunch at the Indian Gardens store on their nice back patio in Oak Creek Canyon. Pretty good sandwiches.

Didn't even get rained on!

We had 9 bikes, more than expected, a couple of folks I had not yet met so that was fun.

I'll try to post up the next rides. We'll get some more rides posted now that the weather is improving.

Hope to see you on the next one!

Re: Rides in the Phoenix AZ area?

So Kevin glad to see that you made it back from your trip. Would like to hear all about it and I think that it would be best heard from a RTE, how about setting one up for the first weekend in Oct. Weather should be a whole lot better than the 110's we had in August.

Re: Rides in the Phoenix AZ area?

Not back yet!

Leaving Cape Cod tomorrow. Heading along the bottom of the great lakes and stopping to see friends along the way. Should be home around the 24th.

So for it's been 17 states, 3600 miles and one tropical storm. (Three times coming up the coast). Out of the 6 travel days to reach the Cape I rode in rain for 5 of them. Bike works great in the rain, the AirFlow jacket and pants not so much. The liner keep me warm but there was some leakage.

I will set up a RTE when I am back in town for next month.

Stay tuned.....

Why am I here and what day is it??

Re: Rides in the Phoenix AZ area?

So,

This weekend its either Phoenix, Payson, Pine, Oak Creek, Jerome, Prescott and home.

Or, who wants to play in the desert down by Tucson? Arizona wine country anyone?

Would love to but my LT is dead in the water right now, if it gets resolved by tomorrow evening maybe I can play too.

Re: Rides in the Phoenix AZ area?

I'm in the middle of a move, not to mention my seat is down with KonTour, so I'm off the grid for a bit. Bruce, what's up with your LT?

Not sure Scott. I had it in the shop on Tuesday to have my Zumo 665 wiring bundle & V1 Power cable properly routed, started and ran fine for the mechanics test ride, started fine for me when I left and ran well for my 50 mile long way home ride. Wed AM leaving for work it cranked but no start. Long story short, I have checked the battery myself and had it checked out at Batteries Plus and it is very good. So not sure if something came loose or was damaged during the service or coincidentally a component failed. They are picking it up this morning to check it out, so hopefully and answer today or tomorrow. Let me know how you like that Kontour Seat, it is one of the seats I am considering.

Giz, Breeze, et al

Sorry you did not make it today, the ride was a blast and the temps were a damn sight nicer than in the Valley.
