Question Route Ideas L.A. to Yellowstone

We found out that we are going to be able to leave a day earlier for our trip to Yellowstone.

Any suggestions of what to do/see on the way there seeing that we are leaving on this Friday and don't check in until Sunday? We would like to arrive in the park mid day.

Thanks in advance.

It looks like you don't have a lot of time and the weather is getting hot in the desert. I'm going from memory but I would head east from LA and pick up US 395 North to Susanville, CA. From there I would take 97 North to Bend, OR. If you have enough time - the Cascade Highway Loop off 97 is worth it. .From Bend pick up US 20E to Yellowstone. You will actually have a short ride on I-84 around Boise, ID. Time and weather will be your concerns. Both the high & low deserts will be hot. An extra day will give you a lot of enjoyable riding. 395 from Bishop CA to Reno is enjoyable and most 97 will offer some great scenery. Maybe some others more familiar with the area can give you better input. Enjoy the the ride and stay safe.

If you're going up 97, think about a quick detour to ride around Crater Lake. If the weather looks good, pack a picnic lunch for one of the many overlooks.

Re: Route Ideas L.A. to Yellowstone

Came the other way 2 summers ago having a GREAT ride doing HWY 50 to the Utah border, stopping by Great basins NP and doing lohman caves. Then north past the Bonneville salt flats to Provo Utah and up along the snake river to Yellowstone NP.

Just sharing suggestions

1+ on the ride into Crater Lake, it will definately be a highlight and it is only about an hour or so of a detour.
