IBR Checkpoint #2 Santa Ana

Checkpoint 2 Sunday, August 30, 9pm 11pm Scoring opens at 5pm

Doubletree Hotel Santa Ana/Orange County Airport

201 East MacArthur Boulevard

Santa Ana CA 92707

The above is from the IBA website - was thinking about showing up just to check out the bikes and make sure Meese has fresh underwear.

If anyone was thinking the same thing maybe we could meet there for any early dinner.

I will be at the checkpoint and look forward to meeting you there. Dinner may depend on rider timing and their various needs, among other things.

Many (probably most) of the riders, including Ken, wear LD Comfort underwear. They are quick and easy to clean and dry in a hotel room, and are specifically designed for long distance motorcycle rides. I recommend them highly. They are expensive, but are designed for riding and well worth it. http://www.ldcomfort.com/

I don't want to be there when you swap undies with Ken.

Great - looking forward to meeting you, too! It's about 97 miles for me - will probably leave Camarillo around 3:00.

I rode cross-country w/ Ken last year, and now possess more knowledge about his underwear protocol than any mortal (except Dale) should know.

Re: IBR Checkpoint #2 Santa Ana

Doug,

Ted and I were there, along with many others.

It was a brutal ride for all of the riders on Sunday through the desert heat. Some of them looked dead on their feet as they checked in and got off the bikes. Considering the temperatures and long hours of riding, Ken looked very good when we saw him. He arrived at the checkpoint around 4:30. You are right. His bike had more bugs than any bike I have ever seen.

Ken had lots to do, so we stayed out of his way for a couple hours until he was ready for us. He ate a meal and prepared for scoring. We helped some other riders while waiting. The scoring took longer than Ken had hoped.

Overall, Ken was well prepared and didn't need much help from any of us. We helped him put new rubber on his bike and fix a GPS problem. We left around 9:30 or so.

Ken got a good night's rest and was on his way the next morning.

Re: IBR Checkpoint #2 Santa Ana

Here are a few photos of Ken from the checkpoint.

1. Ken checking in with Ray Blair.

2. A view of Ken's K1200GT, showing one of his two drink containers, the fuel cell (mostly hidden), backpad, etc. Ray is checking the odometer and GPS maximum speed values.

3. A closeup of Ken's cockpit. GPSs, of course, along with many other gadgets and modifications.

4. A closeup of the bug splats on Ken's bike. The bug splats covered every forward-facing surface of the bike, and the accumulation probably put the K1200GT past its GVWR.

5. Changing a tire. Ken had wheels with new tires ready to go, but for some reason, one of the front wheel rotors didn't align with the brake caliper. Fortunately, another rider's husband had brought a Nomar tire changer. He was very nice, helping Ken exchange tires between the two wheels.

6. Ken adjusting the torque wrench while attaching the front wheel.

I like those bicycle handlebar extenders. I have not seen that before.

Keep on trucking Ken

Hey Doug -

Yes - as David said - Ken looked better than most! I have some pics, too, but there still in my camera. I'll get 'em posted soon.

Ken will place high. Barring the leaders withdrawing, I don't know if it's physically possible for Ken to completely make-up his 10K point deficit, but I think he'll be top five. Reading the IBA reports, seems the play was heading north on Day 1 to Martha's Vineyard. Had Ken done that - I'm sure he'd be right there with Earls & Owen now.

Re: IBR Checkpoint #2 Santa Ana

Thanks for the pic's and updates, hopefully everything will continue going well for Ken, be great so see him finish well! With all those bugs on his bike it may force him to wash it, but then again maybe not as they have been keeping him company.

Re: IBR Checkpoint #2 Santa Ana

Ken reached the final checkpoint with two minutes to spare. I don't know all the details, but it was a very tough night. Hopefully Ken will write up a trip report.

According to Tom Austin's report Thursday evening,
Quote:
Ken Meese switched from a rock hard Metzeler ME 880 rear tire to a stickier Avon Storm to run the last leg. After running the new tire down to the wear bars in 2 days, he was fortunate to line up a replacement tire yesterday without losing much time. But now he has had to spend about four hours dealing with repairs to his shift lever, which fell off of his K1200GT. Glen Pancoast took four hours out of his riding time to help get Ken back on the road. (No, he wont get an extra four hours to finish.)
Even though I bought the bearings and washers a few weeks ago, it makes me think about whether I really want to do that K1200GT shifter mod after all. Hmmm.

Re: IBR Checkpoint #2 Santa Ana

They just announced the results. Ken Meese took 9th place with 11,047 miles and 111,129 points, which is a superb finish for a "rookie". A rookie is a first-time Iron Butt Rally rider.

This is preliminary - IBA site says there will be some revisions - but the top 20 are final.

Way to go Ken!
