Dave, I don't know about the National Park Service Rangers, the LEOs you have to worry about, from Cherokee to Asheville, but I saw several on the Parkway between Fancy Gap and Roanoke VA, two Sundays ago. I talked to a couple of them. You don't want a ticket, $500. No talking your way out because it is a federal citation and not state.

Enjoy your 35th.

I've been on stretches of it the past couple of months. Good shape, but if you are there on the weekend, the traffice will drive you nuts. And, as an added bonus, if you cross the double yellow, even if within the speed limit to pass some sightseeing geezer and his blind dog, you'll get the $500 ticket mentioned earlier. So enjoy the scenery, but don't speed and don't pass, or you'll bring home a momento. Good thing is that federal tickets don't get reported back to the state for points and insurance increases (at least that's what I've been told).

This may be the only road closure on the Parkway.

From the Nat'l Park website:
Closures
A four mile section of the Parkway, Milepost 295-299 near the Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, is closed this summer while repairs to Sims Creek Bridge are taking place. The detour is along US Route 221 and is well marked for Parkway travelers. All Julian Price Park facilities are accessible from the south end of the detour.

I'm planning on heading up the Parkway on June 8 or 9 for a week to 10 days.
