Black Bear Attack ...so sad.. STC II use caution

I sure most of you by now have seen the story in the cable news networks about the Black Bear (500 lbs) attacking a family in the Cherokee National Forest. Sad that a child's life was lost, the mother and another child are in Chattanooga hospital.. and expected to survive..

While the park service and rangers are setting several traps for the bear, please use caution at pull offs in the park... especially near the Cherohala Parkway and Tellico Plains area..which is about 20 miles from the attack... Ironhorse is about 65 miles from the attack... the attack area is about 10 miles from 64 near the Ocoee lake.

Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers..

Don, I read that story yesterday, how sad. In CCR in Gatlinberg I was riding south from the hotel through the national park and saw a black bear cub rolling around in the grss. Did not stop because Momma was probably close by. Thanks for the warning.

looking around for a possible replacement

My wife and I have hiked to Benton Falls where the attack occured. It is ashame, but these things do happen when you are in the woods where Black Bears roam.

We hike in the Smokies and I always wonder how close any bears are!

Be safe and we will see you all Wednesday night.

I've got a bear story from when we were camping at Roan Mountain State Park in East Tennessee a few years ago, that still gives me the 'Willies' every time I think about it.

Hey Dave, you ever hear Robert Earl Keen do those same lyrics in a song? Good stuff.

Having some experience with this sort of thing, usually a speculative field autopsy of the upper gastrol intestinal area will reveal whether it was the right bear. Just make sure Mom isn't there when it happens. There is also the strong possibility of finding tissue evidence under the foreclaws.

We saw a gaggle of idiots(no one from CCR) last summer in Yellowstone running into the brush after a lone bear cub that had wandered near the road. They were trying to get pictures. One of those incidents where the rangers weren't there yet to keep them back. I got out my camera and set it to maximum focal length so I could get some good shots of the tourists being mauled by the mother. The mother and another cub were clearly visible in the direction the cub was traveling. Fortunately, the bear outran them all just as the rangers showed up.(Bears can sprint 40-50 mph when so inclined and that includes coming to the aid of a cub.)

I saw something similar in Cades code a few years back, a couple cubs were playing in a field, some folks were actually walking towards the cubs, we were on the road still, we spotted mom bear in the edge of the woods about that time she stood up and looked that direction, someone hollered to the deathwish folks to get the hell out of dodge, cubs headed towards mom, mom was headed towards cubs, , I was thinking human lucnh for the bear that day!
