Re: Part of the Cherohala Skyway collapses

I was just there this past October.
I got a week in between rainfalls. They really need rain but not like that. Droughts all over and now this. Like the county guy said clean up from a slide is easier than reconstruction when the road itself slides out from under you. The article did not mention injuries hopefully that was a good sign.

Re: Part of the Cherohala Skyway collapses

BTW, Hwy 441 from Cherokee to Gatlinburg is CLOSED due to a massive rock slide; it took out about 100 yards of the highway and it is about 50 ft deep so there is no telling when they will be able to reopen 441.

The slide was on the NC side close to Cherokee but you can get from Gatlinburg to Newfound Gap.

Re: Part of the Cherohala Skyway collapses

There is a parallel gravel road for a lot of the route...good for GS type. Not sure, but I think it starts just outside Robinsville...

Re: Part of the Cherohala Skyway collapses

The "gravelHala" as it is known starts at the TN side 2 miles after the Bald River Falls bridge. It basically parallels the Cherohala and pops back out at the top about at the TN/NC border. So you can go up it and back down but only on the TN side. It is a great GS road and the tree canopy is very dense as there was a light rain falling the last time I rode it and I never felt the rain.

It looks like they will creat an on site detour that will have one lane open so all is not lost. Thanks for finding that Greg.
