North Georgia riding

I've been invited to join some buddies coming up from Florida to the Blairsville, GA area in about a month.

I will be hauling my bike down from Northern MI. The weather would be too iffy to ride down and back at the end of Oct.

What is the riding like there?? What can I expect for weather??

Thanks for any advice!!

You'll be smack dab in the middle of ridding mecca. You can expect lots and lots of twisty mountain roads. Temps could be as low as 40 in the mornings and 70's in the afternoon. Bring rain gear. Now on to what to ride. My opinion on the must rides are as follows but others may have different views.

South
1. ride the Richard B Russel (hwy 348) into Helen
2. Hwy 129 goes North South up and down Blood Mountain
3. Wolf Pen Gap (Hwy 180 to Suches
4. Hwy 60 from Suches to Blue Ridge

North
1. Take Hwy 129 to Deals Gap and run the Dragon
2. Take 129 North to Robinsville then West on the Cherachola Hwy

West
1. Take 76 over to Clayton and pick up Warwoman Rd to Hwy 28
2. Take Hwy 28 North to Highlands (great town) and even better stay on it all the way to Deals Gap

East
1. From Blue Ridge, head South to Ellijay then East on Hwy 52 over Fort Mountain

Have Fun!!!

There will be a bunch of us staying at the Iron Horse Lodge in Robbinsville NC Oct. 20th to the 22nd. Check it out in the rides and rallies section under dates for the STC & SMFR.

Re: North Georgia riding

To what Travman said.

I'd only add these:

If it's a weekend, I'd avoid Deal's Gap as it is CROWDED. Besides the Cherohala is a much better ride. If it's a weekday, go for it to say you did it. Watch out for trucks though.

Leaves will be falling good by then. If it has rained, use caution in some of the corners as those piles of wet leaves can be like ice.

The ride across Fort Mountain is a great ride!

The BMW Motorcycle Owners of Georgia will be riding to the Iron Horse for a stay on October 15.

Enjoy!

Dave, the rides that Travman suggested are all great rides as we have done all of them several times. The weather has been known to be ok during that time, can get real cool at night and rebound nicely during the day!

Also, like Dave aka "saddleman" stated we have our annual Fall Gathering at the Ironhorse Motorcycle Lodge the weekend of 10/21-10/22. We have a great time, eat some great food , do some great rides and talk about the people who aren't there!

Re: North Georgia riding

Thanks for the info. I will print this out and make sure I include those rides.

In regards to the Ironhorse. I may just drive down early, meet up with you all for some riding, then head on down to Blairsville.

Re: North Georgia riding

Did about 165 miles around blairsville including blood mountain. I really liked that. Not sure where to go tomorrow.

Re: North Georgia riding

Georgia HWY 60 from Dahlonega to Blue Ridge is always a nice ride. So is Georgia Hwy 2/52 across Fort Mountain from Ellijay to Chatsworth.

Re: North Georgia riding

We did hwy 60 today. Then did another loop that included 180. What a great day for some great riding!
