Southwest NC - Rte. 281

Rte. 281 goes northwest from Rte. 64, near Toxaway, to an intersection with Rte. 107. Continuing NW (a right turn) on Rte. 107 will take you into Sylva, NC.
15 years ago I rode this route with my father-in-law as passenger on my R11RT. At the intersection of Rtes. 64 and 281, there's a big sign warning Rte. 281 traffic of sharp curves and dirt roads ahead. I took it anyway and, sure enough, after several miles the road turned from blacktop to dirt. I kept going in 2nd gear. Hit some soft sand, but not much, and the road returned to blacktop before reaching Rte. 107. Nice and twisty, but on dirt, who cares?

Took Rte. 281 a week ago with the wife. The big sign is still there for Rte. 281 traffic: twisties and dirt road ahead. Took it anyway - and Rte. 281 is now paved all the way from Rte. 64 to Rte. 107.

There's gravel at the edges of the road in almost every turn, and it's black. The quality of the blacktop is not very good, and it seems to be disintegrating into black gravel near the edge of the road. Otherwise, it's a fun road - nice and twisty. At the northwest end, go left on Rte. 107 and you'll ride south past Thorpe Reservoir into Cashiers, NC.

Fun road - formerly dirt, sign says it's still dirt - but it's paved all the way from Rte 64 to Rte. 107. Enjoy.

Thanks Bob...always wondered what was "up" 281...been by that intersection with 64 many times. Matter of fact, 215, is one of my favorites around here. I like it better than the Dragon! MUCH less traffic and better/faster curves. I'll be sure to check out this route very soon!
