BRP- Closed?????

Hmmm....with all of this talk of a government shut down this weekend, do you think the Parks department would close the Parkway?

From Yahoo

http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_theloo...nment-shutdown

So what areas *will* be affected?

If the 1995 government shutdown is a guide, around 1 million Americans who work for the federal government would likely be forced off the job or onto unpaid furloughs. In 1995, only 4 percent of workers at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and 11 percent of their counterparts at the Department of Education, came to work.

In addition, national parks and museums would be closed (including the National Mall and the Washington Monument, so you might want to reschedule that family trip to Washington, D.C.). Applications for passports and visas wouldn't be processed. And NASA's preparation for space shuttle flights would be interrupted, pushing back launch dates for some scheduled missions -- though likely not for the Endeavour launch, in which recovering Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) hopes to watch her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, participate.

Nope. They won't have anyone working to close the gates.

They normally don't close the BRP for a Govt shut down. Nor do they close 441 over the mountain between Gatlinburg and Cherokee. Maybe there won't be as many officers patroling to roads...

Re: BRP- Closed?????

My thought (hope?) was that the rangers would not be there and no speed enforcement. : )
The local news said the gates would be closed. Which would be interesting in that a LOT of folks, including a guy here at work, just about HAVE to use the BRP to get to work. But it was avoided so we'll have to wait to see.

Re: BRP- Closed?????

just got back from the area on Sat, 4/9. Went of the Smokeys on Thur. Hwy 441 was fine except for some road constuction. No sign of BRP being closed when we got that far. Did the Cherohaha Skyway - "in the clouds". Will have to come back sometime on a clear day.

Re: BRP- Closed?????

Where on the BRP are there gates other than the 105 mile section marked off as Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park? The National Park is the only reason there are gates on the drive from Front Royal, VA to Cherokee, NC. So just get on the BRP at Rockfish Gap at Waynesboro, VA and no tolls or gates.

Re: BRP- Closed?????

FWIW, there were a ton of gates along the way. They actually closed the BLue Ridge just south of Mt. Mitchell today.

Re: BRP- Closed?????

There are gates on the BRP. I have no idea where they all are, but a guy here at work lives up there and says they close them for weather-related issues. When it snows, he has a heck of a time getting in. I'm not sure how it would be affected by gov't shutdown, but it isn't a "public road", so I guess they could shut down parts of it. Would make patrolling easier if manpower were limited.
