Blue ridge pkwy

Hey all;

Hopefully you can see my map. Ideas of where to stay. B & Bs are our choice, but any ideas are good ideas.

I didn't see all of your route, but if you are riding into Virginia on the Blue Ridge Parkway, at the state line of NC and Va there is a great B&B, check there site at www.innatorchardgap.com , I highly recommend this place, the owners are super and so is the breakfast. We have stayed there several times. There are several wineries with in 30 minutes of the Inn, go get you a bottle and enjoy the evenings with your lady.

Stay in one of the top rooms, the rooms are very clean, great views and very quite . Their driveway is gravel on goes up to the Inn, I am short and have no issues with getting the LT up the driveway, or down!

I can't make out the whole route but if you go anywhere near Staunton, VA, definitely stop at Zynodoa Restaurant. The chef is from the famous Inn at Little Washington (another great place to stop if you feel like spending big $).

Zynodoa is reasonably priced and has great food / atmosphere. We stopped there on a trip south in March and were very impressed.

here's a link: http://www.zynodoa.com/

answers;

I will answer a few questions. we live in south Florida. Traveling north to Norfolk to visit our daughter and then west thru Va, South on the ridge, maybe try and pick up the Dragon and then southeast thru georgia and back thru boring Florida. Leaving on the 9th june back on the 19th.
Hope this explains our trip and helps with your great ideas.

Re: Blue ridge pkwy

We just got back from driving the parkway from Asheville north to near Blowing Rock.

We stayed at the Switzerland Inn. I'd stay there again. Very good views but a little pricey. It has a restaurant and bar (a plus for me because I like a beer or two after driving). It's in Little Switzerland and right off the parkway.

Also the road was closed by Linville Falls. We had to get off on 221 and go about 19 miles before getting back on the parkway. And they were doing tree trimming and road work and stopping traffic so plan extra time for stoppages.

And I think it's closed somewhere south of Asheville.

Here's a link for the road closures;

Re: Blue ridge pkwy

I was on the Parkway at the end of April. It was closed south of grandfather Mountain. They had bad ice storms and it took a lot of tree tops off, so there is lots of clean up. Hope this helps.

Re: Blue ridge pkwy

SIDE NOTE - The last time I rode the Blue Ridge Parkway, near the southern end, there are several tunnels that at the time were not lit. Seems like one makes a 90-180 degree turn that really scared me because I had just come out of the shade and had on sunglasses on. Between the poor light from the bike, the sun in my eyes and the 90 + degree turn and I was sweating bullets!

Hope fully there is better warning, or maybe I just missed it, but at every tunnel, be extra careful and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Re: Blue ridge pkwy

Go to the NPS web site and check closures. It was closed south of the Pisgah Inn and closed north of the Pisgah Inn in April. Had to go to Waynesville and up 276 to get to the Inn. Looks like those are open now, but always check it before you start the trip.

Just ate breakfast at this place this morning. ---> http://freebornes.com/index.html It's a couple miles north of the Parkway, milepost 248, NC Hwy 18, Laurel Springs, NC. While I can't comment on the accommodations, the omelet I had this morning was excellent! The place was renovated and only reopened spring of 2009.

We stopped at this place about 5 years ago and I was NOT impressed. If it was renovated just last year maybe it is a better place.

Thanks Lee for posting as we will stop by next time in the area.

This place is about a 1/4-1/2 mile off of the Parkway.

Brett,
You're probably right about the distance to the Parkway. It wasn't far off, I just couldn't remember how far off. It's definitely on my "do again" list.

I stayed there last night after an all day ride with Dave (dznam) from Maine & two of his buddies. I don't know what the cabin rooms are like but the upstair suite is nice. The place was clean & the food was good. The owners ride bikes & have some lists of good rides to go on. Like Bret said it's a 1/4 mile north of the Parkway.

Re: Blue ridge pkwy

Freeborne's (?) used to be called Station's Inn. Nice enough place. Used to have reasonably good food, bike friendly etc. I think the owners split up and now own two different places in that area? I think someone told me that recently anyway.

I thought I already posted about the area around milepost 200. That's my area - I'm about 15 miles away in Mount Airy, NC and can provide information if needed.

Re: Blue ridge pkwy

Hey All;

Thanks for all the advice so far. Im starting to book reservations. We usually can do 700/day.
Can I expect about 150-200 on the BRP, easy pace, stopping for pics. Tried twice before up there and twice down, rain and tropical storm. Third times a charm. Hows the GPS work up there, ever lose the signal?
