Key West Suggestions?

Taking off in a couple of weeks on a trip from Atlanta to Key West and back. Any suggestions on places we should stop in the Keys? Any suggestions on places to stay in the Keys?

When making suggestions, please keep in mind my moto......"we ride to eat" !

Thanks!

Rocket Ron

Sorry for the error in spelling. I meant MOTTO....although MOTO isn't too far off!

Re: Key West Suggestions?

Not to highjack this thread but unless you have a butt load of money you can see and do all you can afford at Key West in 2-3 days. I would recommend 2-3 days there and then back to St. Augustine. Park the LT and rent a scooter. Plenty to do and plenty to see.

Re: Key West Suggestions?

Suggestions noted!

Except for Budzee.
I spend thousands on an LT, I work my butt off just so I can get away for a road trip and you suggest I park my LT and RENT a SCOOTER????? Don't think so !!!!!! These trips are for one reason only. And that's so I can ride this LT.

Re: Key West Suggestions?

Hello Rocketron

We stayed on Long Key cannot remember the name but was about 1/2 price of Key West and not the carnival type place ,we took a sunset ride to Key West for dinner and the street performers . Robbie's of Islamorada to feed the HUGE TARPON !. we also picked up a cocoa nut and sprouted it for an indoor plant .Got all the information off the internet we did .
Expect to ride slow as the speed limit is 40-45 MPH

Enjoy the sunsets

Re: Key West Suggestions?

We always stay in Big Pine or Cudjoe Key it quite a bit cheaper plus get to enjoy the ride to Key West. Stop at the No Name Pub in Big Pine great place to eat. Since spring break is over I would suggest parking in the parking garage past Sloppy Joes. They let my cousin and I park both bikes for 10 bucks all day.

Scott and gbob, thanks for the info. I'm making a list of all the suggestions. I like the idea of the parking garage too.

Rode down a month ago and went out on one of the tall masted schooners for a sunset cruise. Great time. We went out on the Appledore with is a wooden schooner. www.appledore2.com/
Also good time at Irish Kevins, a great bar with full time entertainment.

To look more like "one of the locals" shave your legs!

Every Friday afternoon/evening there is a solid line of cars leaving Miami going to the Keys,
they all return Sunday afternoon/evening,

It takes a lot longer to travel that last hundred miles than you've planned,
mostly because of the 35/45 mph speed limits
protecting the Key deer and Florida Panther,

local law enforcement is well "funded" by those who get impatient,

The scenery is terrific just take your time.

Re: Key West Suggestions?

It's been a few years since I lived in south Florida. When I would go down to the keys I usually liked Islamorada - there was a popular Tiki Bar there, a dive company that would take you scuba diving and a boat launch area, and of course, fishing. When I went all the way down to Key West I usually tried to stay in Marathon. Again, scuba diving and fishing trips available. You can usually find nice places to rent and there are campgrounds between Marathon and Key West. Sugarloaf has a KOA I think. There's lot's of fishing opportunities. There used to be a boat in Key west (actually more than one) that takes you out to the Dry Tortugas for the weekend - get on Friday night and return Sunday morning and fish day and night in between, if that's your thing. One of them docked over by the Turtle Crawls, if that is still there. I did that once and that is a weekend I won't forget. If you like to do that sort of thing take a car sometime or you won't be able to bring home any fish. As someone else mentioned, an LT is a bit of overkill for sight seeing in Key West. Almost like driving around in a car. Consider a bicycle, moped or scooter. Check out the web, 'cause there is lot's of info there. I'll tell you, though, you got a lot of guts riding a bike down 95 through south Florida or Florida's Turnpike if you go that way. Stay safe and alert. Have fun.

Thumbs up Re: Key West Suggestions?

Try the Key Fisheries Market and Marina in Marathon, end of 36th street. The Lobster Rueben is famous.

Re: Key West Suggestions?

Thanks for lots of good suggestions.....and...warnings! We'll be staying in Ft.Laud Sunday night and riding down the keys on Mon sometime so the traffic shouldn't be a problem.

Shaving the legs???? I did wear a purple arm cast to KW once. I know....stupid. Doc asked what color....I said whitle will get dirty, black will be hot, purple? Yea....that's the ticket! All the little kids will call me BARNEY!!!!! Big mistake! My buddies just made fun of me and my wife didn't like all the guys hitting on me....with their shaved legs!

Re: Key West Suggestions?

Ron,

Unless you have a reason to stay in Lauderdale I would suggest taking the center part of the state through south Florida, there are some very nice country roads west of I-95 that take you down around Lake Okeechobee. Everglade City and US-41 (Tamiami Trail) are also a nice diversion to the east coast traffic that will be busy no matter the day.

Ron,

Unless you have a reason to stay in Lauderdale I would suggest taking the center part of the state through south Florida From Merritt Island south. There are some very nice country roads west of I-95 that take you down around Lake Okeechobee. Everglade City and US-41 (Tamiami Trail) are also a nice diversion to the east coast traffic that will be busy no matter the day. If you don't mind hard pack gravel the Loop Rd off of US-41 is a must see for the real heart of the Everglades. I'll second Alabama Jacks on the Card Sound route out of Florida City.

Best oysters rockefeller and conch sevichie in the Keys is at Turtle Crawls in Key West.

Re: Key West Suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestions Charlie. We do have to go to Ft Laud. We're staying with a friend in his "multi million $ home" along the water with pool. The wives wouldn't forgive us if we didn't. But maybe we can go that route on the way back.

Re: Key West Suggestions?

If you're staying in Ft. Lauderdale and you like to eat, go to Sea Watch Restaurant. I think the stone crab claws are still in season.
