Hey, Mense in Myrtle Beach!!!

Whazzup with the BBQ'n gittin' outta hand?? Sure looks dire on the news channels - sumpthin' about being the worst in 3 decades.

Hope you and yours are safe and sound, Jeff. Check in when you can and bring us some good news. And the best to all the other forum members that hail from that part of the country - hope you're safe too.

I was wondering the same this morning. You never know by watching the news, but it looks pretty bad.

Re: Hey, Mense in Myrtle Beach!!!

I was thinking about everyone there as soon as I saw the news. I still have a couple of friends, and a cousin that live there too. When I lived there, we had a very similar fire, a little further south. Fortunately not many homes burned then. I was evacuated though. Those massive pine forests are almost explosive! We were watching the progression of the fire south as it passed just west of us, got within about a mile, and the sounds of the pine trees exploding were almost like a war zone. Very scary. The firefighters thought it would stop at hwy 501 between Myrtle Beach and Conway, a wide 4 lane. Nope, balls of fire the size of cars were blowing across! We had embers landing in our neighborhood, and the fire was a mile away.

Sure hope all our Myrtle Beach members get out of this in good shape!

Re: Hey, Mense in Myrtle Beach!!!

Thanks for your thoughts folks. All is well for my family and the other LT riders in the area. It is a significant fire and as David mentioned, loblolly pine forest and high winds make for incredible speeds. It was estimated that it was moving about 40 mph when it jumped Hwy 31, a road built to Interstate specs, three lanes each direction. Had to evacuate my parents for the day yesterday but got them back home last night. Looks like they are beginning to get some control of the perimeters and humidity is back in our normal 90% range. This is very swampy land and once the peat base gets lit up it can be literally months, or a hurricane, before it will stop smoldering.
