weekend rides in FL

Hey all,

Just moved to the Orlando area from PA. Anybody have suggestions on where to go and see on weekend bike trips? We like visiting parks, historic places, beaches, museums, sample neat hole-in-the-walls, cafes, hotels, etc. as well as favorite roads all in one-day or two-day rides. I also like doing charity rides.

I rode the LT down from PA a few weeks ago but since I'm currently in a motel, I have it stored up in Port Orange. This weekend looks like nice weather (then I was told it may be like more-or-less like this until March or so) and I need a fun ride to clear my head.

So it would be great if anyone can offer some riding ideas. Thanks.

Jon

Re: weekend rides in FL

Take Rt. 40 from Holly Hill through the Ocala National Forest to Ocala and then Rt. 441 north to Gainesville. A very nice and peaceful ride about 125 miles long.

Welcome to Florida ........ and don't miss this:

Florida RTE Saturday January 10th - 2009

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Y'all are once again invited to attend the Third annual
Florida Ride to eat, greet and meet your forum friends and fellow riders
At the River Ranch Resort, high noon,

Saturday January 10th 2009

We've had a real good turn out the past two years at the River Ranch Resort,

there's plenty of room and the River Ranch seemed to be more than adequate
and centrally located enough to attract riders from both coasts

so let's "do it again"

here are some directions to the River Ranch Resort
3200 River Ranch Blvd.
River Ranch, FL 33867

From the Florida Turnpike,
take exit 193 at Yeehaw Junction, go 21 miles west toward Lake Wales or S.R. 60.

If you're coming from the west coast,
take U.S. 27 to Lake Wales and go 25 miles east on S.R. 60.

The main gate is at. Lat/Lon 27-48-299 - 081-13-183

If you go up into the area of the Ocala National Forest on Rt 40 you could stop off at Juniper Springs Recreational Area.
http://www.tfn.net/springs/Juniper.htm
Pack a lunch and you can spend a day there. Learn the history of the natural springs in Florida, walk the nature trail, and best of all rent a canoe and spend a few hours on the unspoiled Juniper Creek enjoying nature. It's pretty much the way Florida used to be before the contractors started paving over the entire state.

Re: weekend rides in FL

There's a lot of nice places to visit in Florida,
Dave mentioned the Fort in St. Augustine this time of year the lights in that city are incredible.

There are a lot of nice roads around the Ocala forest
and the area around Groveland and DadeCity has hills, curves and Orange groves

Here are a couple of links for you.

Re: weekend rides in FL

Hey, thanks for the ideas! Bring 'em on! (Is there a touring giude for FL riders? - probably, eh?)

I'm thinking about doing some sort of loop tomorrow - out of Port Orange (where the bike is) up to maybe Fort Matanzas and/or Fortastillo de San Marecos and somehow tying it to the Ocala National Forest... the Juniper Springs Recreational Area sounds rather nice... (yes, I have not thought it through yet... LOL)

Then maybe shooting south on Sunday... anything within a days riding (back to Port Orange (to deliver bike back to it's secure site) or norther Orlando (where motel is)???

Anyone want to come along? :-) I'm game to rmake a weekend of it...
