Savannah for Christmas

My wife and I are heading down to visit Savannah Georgia from Christmas to New Years. I've been reading up on the place and it seems there will be plenty to do while we're there but I was wondering if there were and routes floating around that we can ride while were there. Also any "must see" sights would be great as well.

I'd appreciate any information you can provide for the trip down.

Re: Savannah for Christmas

Hi Don. Just a suggestion, how about going through Wilmington N.C. and going aboard the battle ship USS NORTH CAROLINA. I wondered around below decks and got lost. Had a hell-of-a-time finding my way out.but it was great. Also in Charleston S.C. there is patriots point with the USS YORKTOWN and 4 or 5 other ships and a WW2 sub. that you can go on. check on the hours over the holidays.

Re: Savannah for Christmas

We're making B-Line south to Savannah Christmas day. Maybe on the way back north though. Thanks for the ideas.

Re: Savannah for Christmas

Not much of any place to ride here in Sav. that isn't flat and straight.
As far as "must see sights"..what are you interested in? There is the 8th Air Force museum, The train museum, the historic houses, the Butterduck winery with some unusual wines. Roebling Road raceway (private, no spectators) and as mentioned there is Charleston...not very far from Sav at all. You can hang out on River street (lots of shops & bars) and watch the ships come and go. Or you could take a trip to the Okefenokee.

Re: Savannah for Christmas

I've spent a lot of time on Mapsourse and Google Earth and I've learned pretty much what you've just said. Their was a rally on Tybee Island not to long ago and I couldn't help but wonder why. I even posted on the site asking for route suggestions and didn't get a single suggestion.

That's ok, we're looking foreword to it anyway if for nothing else than to escape the cold.

What is the "Okefenokee"?

Swamp/wildlife refuge. You know...the place where Pogo lived.

Re: Savannah for Christmas

Oh, so that's how you are getting there. I was kinda wanderin. My wife and I just pulled in the drive back home last night after a week riding down south. 29 F with some flurries in NC.

After many trips past the 8th Air Force museum, once we had our dog and he wasn't allowed in, we finally went through. We only spent 3 hours in there and it still wasn't long enough. Highly recommend it though if you have an interest in WW2, aviation , or history.

Have fun. Savannah is a great place, but really needs to be visited around St. Patricks Day, especially if you hate crowds.
