Post Benefit Event for Children's Home

Here is information about my benefit event for Eldridge Children’s Home in NW Alabama. This home receives no state or federal monies, small home, has about 30 to 35 children of all ages, the home was started over 60 years ago, supported by local people and churches.

They have most of these children from an early age to graduation from high school, and then if the child wants to continue their education, a full scholarship awaits them..thanks to the Free Will Baptist College, Nashville TN.

We (our five member benefit team) will adopt all the children and fill a “wish list” for each child… we also form organized, escorted rides to the home. Our benefit team provides free lunch with the help of local folks. Gift cards are the best gift..From any store or retail outlet…can be used all year long.. Or donations by check to Eldridge Children’s Home.

Escorted ride or JUST RIDE IN, be there by 12 noon, First Saturday in December, always, weather will not stop the event…

Currently they have children from not only Alabama, but from Georgia, South Carolina, Florida, Tennessee and Mississippi.

www.eldridgetoyrun.com is the link, we will update this site all month long, if you need information, give me a PM or reply….

Last year our own Bruce Harris Jr. was the longest distance rider award winner with 650 miles. We will again award a long distance award plus riders from over 100 miles will be added to our rider’s plaque and display in the home all year. So be sure to add your name, hometown and miles traveled.

In by noon, out by 2 PM, free lunch provided and I promise you will leave a warm heart.

See you in Eldridge Alabama, First Saturday in December.

Located in NW Alabama, intersection of Hwy 78 and State Hwy 13, 50 miles north of Tuscaloosa, 70 miles NW of Birmingham, 50 East of Tupelo MS.

Need motel information give me PM or email..

Thumbs up

Hey Don, I'm thinking 'bout starting out from Ocracoke, NC (on the Outter Banks of NC) just so's I can stay somewhat in contention for the LD award this year. I'd like to echo Don's invitation to join a bunch of folks for a good time while supporting a really worthy cause. Please attend if at all possible!

Don,
Can you provide a breakdown on the number of boys/girls and ages? I saw you mentioned this on the other forum about gettin' sizes, wish lists, etc. from the childen. I'd like to give this to the church down here and at work so anyone who is interested can donate/purchase accordingly.

Thanks,
Jack

Jack, We, the benefit team have "adopted" out all the children, here how we do it, 45 days out we get the current list of 30 -35 children and ages, sizes and have each child make a wish list of five items they want, then members of the benefit team will take a child or two, fill the list...this way we have all the children covered as to their personal wish list, then we purchase some things for children arriving at the last minute so to speak... This home allows children to be dropped off by parents, aunts and uncles, grandparents and so forth that find they can no longer support extra children, .. unfortunely most of this children spend most of their childhood at the home, however should the parents or grandparents find themselves better able to support the children, then they can pick them up... The home accepts no state or federal money, so they are not under mandates as to keeping and releasing children...they have been doing this for 60 plus years...so I think it works... and if the child, after graduation wants to attend college or Voc-tech school, that is covered as well, the Free Will Baptist College in Nashville furnishes full college scholarships... amazing what folks and groups banning together can accomplish .

They maintain eight homes within the campus, plus activity building, they have several vans that they bus the children to a bus pick up point for public school, transport children for extra school activities such as sports, plus summer outings and church. Note: The University of Alabama furnishes tickets and seating during homecoming and some home games. (50 miles away). The point... they try real hard to give these children a somewhat "normal" life.

They have a building fund as well, we have started to put some money each year in the building fund and our goal is to someday have a new gym/activity building that the "bikers" build...

Since the rides have started, the awareness we have started has got some smaller churches and groups to put a monthly or yearly donation into their budget. This would be great for your church or even a one time donation...

Being Christmas, we feel that they are blessed with many small gifts and yes sometimes to many...but we have ask our riders to bring donations, gift cards from any retail, gas, building supply store, they can be used all year long... BTW the building supply cards came in real handy with the wind damage from Katrina and Frances, Ivan and few more last year....

Myself and three others started the idea and the benefit team, the first year we had about 275 bikers in one of the coldest days in December. These bikers generated over $10,000.00, the second year in a nice 68 degree day 350 bikers generated over $18,000 plus. The benefit team has grown from four to 20 members, the first year and second year the ride started in Amory MS and traveled to Eldridge Alabama. This year we have expanded the ride to come from Birmingham area, Tuscaloosa area, North AL, and Amory MS, plus for those who don't like organized, escorted rides will just like in...

The benefit team along with area churches and food sources furnish a free meal of soup/stew/sandwich/desert to all that attend...

Long distance award, "from the heart award" , riders list of those who traveled over 100 miles, and best of all.. we get to see the children open their gifts, see where our donations go, fellowship will all the riders and children and some take the children for a ride within the campus.

BTW, the benefit team returns a couple times a year for cookouts and birthdays the children...

Not a local home...currently the home has children from several southeast states, I think one from Florida now...two from Georgia, one from Tennessee, then Alabama, Louisana and Mississippi. While they have requests to take hundreds, they only have resources to handle up to 35.

Sorry Jack this got long, but information maybe others can see and use, hope to see you and others for this event...

Any questions by anyone, give me reply...

The promise and guarantee...you will leave with full stomach and warm heart

Boy I sure thet didn't take any of the children were at the Florida game! Seeing something like that could scar a child for life. But on the other hand...a little orange and blue might brighten the place up around the holidays...hmmmm. Looking forward to the ride, thanks for the additional info.

To update my own thread, but would there be an interest of those coming on Saturday for the Benefit to stay over in or near BHam and do Barber's Museum on Sunday?

The home is about 80 miles from Barber's.

Here is update on our event.. see other threads for more details

Jack Howdeshell (jhowdy) was the Long Distance Award winner, second year that LT rider has won.

Not counting the gifts of toys and “wish list” gifts we where able to raise $16,500 for the event, thanks to the riders and local business sponsors. With goods, food and services donated plus the gifts we have estimated the benefit raised over $25,000.

Can’t put a dollar figure on the smiles, tears of joy and awareness of the needs of this rural NW children’s home. They have children from all over the Southeastern U.S. as well.

The weather hurt our over all attendance this year, some severe weather warnings North and East of us didn’t help and well as some early morning sleet in NW Alabama, man did the NWS, Weather Channel and other missed the long range forecasts… but when riders are turned back by severe weather…. get in their cars and come on anyway…well that speaks volumes….
