GA RTE - Feb 10

It seems at the last outing, the Tiger Mart in Tiger, GA for Tiger Burgers was the subject of discussion for the next RTE. So, we'll make it for Feb 10, 11:30 to ????. Quote from johnrehder and gruvis "Best burgers in the state". (I guess we'll see about that one.)

So since John and Greg are the only ones that know where this place is, I suggest one of them be the ride master for this little escapade. Meet at the Shoney's west side off GA-400 at Exit 14, at say 9:30 or so. Then run around the North Georgia mountains if ya want after lunch. Tentative route attached, but GPS dudes can lead.

So who's in?

Farmers

We checked the Farmers Almanac (didn't you) and it's supposed to snow in GA. that day. A good GA boy should know to check the FA. Will the spiked tires they use in ice racing clear the suspension.

If there is no ice on the road we may show.

Count me in; Honeybunny maybe.

On my trips to Tiger I usually go up US19 to SR115. Take that East to Cleveland, then 17/75 North to US 76, and finally US 76 East to Tiger. I don't remember the last few turns as I'm usually following the GPS. Now that's around 2 1/2 hours at least.

I think we can shave about half an hour by taking a more direct route from Cleveland to Tiger.

If that's still too much we can navigate to US23 and take that North. Mapquest says thats around 1 1/2 hours. But that around 50 not too exciting miles going up US23.

I'll post another update after I've done some research.

Watch the weather up here!! and take the back roads into tiger much nicer scenery. we have had ice a couuple times now and they gravel everything in site when that happens

you are better off heading right up 400 to 115 through cleveland then choose any route from there to tiger (particlularly back roads) it is much nicer riding and less traffic by a long shot you will make better time and have a better time

The meeting sounds great. I should have my bike by then. I'll need to check with Rick Mayer though. My seat production is February 7th. If I need to I may come in my cage to meet. Isn't that exit 14 in Cumming, not exit 4?

Smile Re: Best Burger at Tiger?

Well, IMHO it comes down to two places, Tiger is one of them. The other is Turner's Corner and I can't decide which is best. But if there is not snow or ice on the ground, I highly suspect that Cindy and I will be there.

For those of the unique shopping mind, there are some fairly nice shops just up the road in Clayton. If riding is your thing, the there is Lake Rabun Rd which will lead you back west, highly senic and extremely curvy.

Now Tiger is off the main highway, on OLD Highway 441. If you come up 441 there used to be a sign pointing the road to Tiger. With all the construction I can't say for sure if it is still there, it was last summer.

With that, the count is rising, so join in and have a super burger made FRESH.

I ran a "shortest distance" route yesterday and found that it takes about two hours from our proposed starting point to get to the Tiger Mart. I also sampled the hamburger and Thomasina had the smoked sausage, just to make sure they were up to snuff... they were.

The route was very scenic, a little construction here and there -

From GA400 go North until it ends and continue on SR115 to Cleveland
Left on US 129 to SR 75
Right on SR 17 to SR 256
Right on SR197 to Burton Dam Rd
Left on Bridge Creek Rd
Tiger Mart on left at the end of Bridge Creek

Unfortunately Thomasina was cold the entire ride, so we left Tiger and headed to MOA for heated gloves and a jacket liner. But by that time it had warmed up to over 60.

I hope the 10th brings as nice a weather.

Jay:

Like they say, if you miss it, you have missed Tiger. It is at the intersection of old highway 441, Bridge Creek Rd on the west, and 441 Connector on the east. I'm assuming you will be coming down hwy 441 from the north. After you pass Clayton, a few more miles down the road keep looking on the right for a sign that says Tiger, it will be on the right. Turn right on it and follow it to the 4 way stop. The Tiger Food Mart will be on the NW corner of that intersection. Here is the link to a pic of it:

If you have MS Street and Trips I can send you a detailed map to it. Let me know.

Hey Jay I think I found it on Yahoo Maps, Set your location to Tiger Food Mart , Bridge Creek Rd ,Tiger GA. It will ask you to pick a location select [22-52] If I am able to make it maybe we can meet and ride down together. The weather looks like Snow possible Saturday and about 40 Sunny on Sunday. It will depend on work with me though. Will keep you posted.

Meet at the Shoney's west side off GA-400 at Exit 14, at say 9:30 or so. Then run around the North Georgia mountains if ya want after lunch. Tentative route attached, but GPS dudes can lead.

So who's in?

1 & 2 - Steve and Connie Rowe

I rode through Cumming on Sunday and didn't see the Shooney's at 400 (I didn't look real hard ). Am I going to have any problems finding it Saturday?

If you were to take GA 20 from the Mall of Georgia to Cumming, when you cross over GA 400, the Shoney's will be on your right. I'll be caging it this weekend since my bike is in the shop getting the rear end fixed.

I do hope this is not what I think it is. As for caging it, if Cindy and I make it we will be in a cage also. Can't do 2 1/2 hrs of under 40 degress without electrics. One item still on my shopping list, Gerbings.

To answer you and Al, Final verdict is the bearing in the rear end. More play than is normal and enough to make the seal leak. The mechanic and I talked and if there is no damage to the rear cases and the gears, then he'll do a rebuild. If not full replacement. I'm also having them change the oils and install the new throttle cables while they are at it.

Depending on the weather in the morning, my good friend Tom has offered me the use of his LT to pop in to lunch if I want to ride into Dahlonega first to pick it up. We'll see what the weather is doing in the morning.

Steve, I think my luck may be a little better than yours... my LT is sitting at Blue Moon waiting for a pinion bearing seal and a new brake fluid reservoir. Jan and I will have to come up to Tiger in a Civic Hybrid. Anyway, we'll get to meet some new friends!!!

I hope everyone made it home safe

For all those that said they were coming out today but didn't show, WE MISSED YOU. We had 11 folks show up today, 6 in cages and 5 on 4 bikes. Jay and Gilda Slomka, Al and Jan Strickland (1st timers), John and Cindy Carver, Greg and Honeybunny (I'm going to get in trouble for that one) on the bike, Rod and his friend, Patrick, on bikes and me. My Friend, Tom Gallo, lent me his LT to get to the outing while he was adding farkles to Karen's bike. Thanks Tom.

And just a few pictures of this little get together. Mr Rehder, I hope the new Mustang GT was worth missing the burgers.

I hope everyone made it home safe - Part 2

Just a few more pictures from this afternoon. Jay, how many times did Gilda talk to your daughter today? Yes Lucille, that is snow beside the road. And one of several covered bridges left in Georgia. Karen's GS in the farkle process (6 gallon aux fuel tank). Tom's new toy.

It looks like y'all had a pretty good turn out,

I hope to attend one of your "getogethers" in the near and "warmer" future,
I wimped out although the weather wasn't the only factor,
earlier in the week I finally had to succumb to redo all of the kitchen cabinets,
with only one side completed I knew I wasn't going to get a "weekend pass"
although "she" did give me the day off yesterday
and I squeezed out a 300 mile loop
(didn't see any of that white stuff along side the road which is good
but then there weren't any covered bridges either )
that's a cool picture,
you wouldn't happen to have the GPS co-ordinates of that bridge would ya?

If I had really known how to use the Garmin 287C on Tom's bike I would have pulled them for you. It is definately a return trip. I'll pull them with the GPS built into the cell phone next time I'm up that way and will post them somewhere.

Google Earth it, or maybe Virtual Earth too. There should be co-ordinates on either site, if you can find the bridge from overhead. Have fun.

Well, I played with Google Earth to find the site where the bridge is located and then used my DeLorme mapping software to come up with the following:

N34 42.704
W83 39.434

I hope that helps.

The Bridge in the picture is the Stovall Mill Bridge. You can find more information about all the covered bridges still standing in Georgia right here.
