Driver License and Vehicle Registration?

We still have our CA driver's licenses and our vehicles still have California plates.
I understand these transactions are made at different offices, unlike CA.

Do I need to bring the vehicles with me to transfer them to GA? Then do I get license plates instantly? Is there a test or inspection for the bike?

Best way to get a driver license? Will this be a simple transfer and include the M endorsement?
More important, will my CA record follow me or do I start clean slate?
Thanks!

For the cars, you will need an emissions test, bike not required. Plenty of places around to get that done. Some discount the normal fee of $25 to a lesser amount so look around first. I think you have 30 days to transfer the vehicles but there is a catch that I don't think Whisky or I mentioned when you were looking for a place here. Ga charges a one time tax based on some value of the vehicle that they determine and there after, there is only a $20 tag fee but the first time can hurt if they are new expensive cars. You should be able to get plates immediately once the fees are paid.

Not sure about what they will do on the license but I would expect the M classification would be transferred ( did from VA 30+ years ago) but make sure you ask that it is done so they don't forget it.

As for your record, I have no idea. Is that like Vegas

Just remembered that you have to provide sufficient ID for a license like birth certificates and proof you are not from another planet and such. I would get on the motor vehicle site and look at what you need to bring so you don't have to go back a second time.

We still have our California Driver Licenses, expired passports, and lease agreement for our rental home. I think (hope) this should suffice.

Re: Driver License and Vehicle Registration?

Check the DMV website, but I'm pretty sure all you need is a piece of mail with your name on it and something like a voter registration card or birth certificate.

The license will fully transfer, my nephew just did it. Shouldn't take more than a few minutes if you time it right. A lot of the DMV offices are even open on Saturday, just check hours before you go because the ones that are open on the weekend are usually closed on Mondays.

Re: Driver License and Vehicle Registration?

Since Sandy and I are AAA members, I would check to see if they handle vehicle registration in Georgia like they do in California, and would assume the driver's licenses would be done by their DMV, but would check to see if they take appointments to avoid outrageous lines....

AAA was a no-go here. In fact I cannot even find an office for them; every search takes me to a AAA Car Care Center.
In Georgia there are 2 separate offices: 1 for drivers licenses, and 1 for vehicle registration.

I had to pay a small fortune to register 2 of the cars and the bike, in excess of $1,700 The state uses NADA as a source for the "value" of your vehicle and charges something like 7.4%.

Good news is that the yearly tab only costs $20.
More good news: the 86 Porsche does not need a smog test!

A driver's license costs $32 and is valid for 8 years! Cool!

In addition to all the documents you mentioned the DDS (no, not a dentist, Department of Driver services ) required a proof of Social Security.
Good thing I checked when I was handed my new Georgia license; they had forgotten to transfer my M endorsement. All good now!
