Slave Cylinder Tech Session In North Carolina

OK Guys...here's the deal. I live in Cornelius, NC (just north of Charlotte, NC) and myself and one other guy just replaced both of our Slave Cylinders and drilled weepholes in both bikes. Both went extremely smooth and each one took about 3-4 hours to perform. The second bike was much quicker!

I would love to host a Tech Session to do this procedure at my garage. I have all the necessaries (tool wise), and will volunteer the labor, snacks and a great time! Is there anyone in this area who needs the service done on their bike and would like the free service? You would need to purchase your own parts ahead of time, but we can "sho 'nuff" perform the task!

We could possibly do two in one day, but we'd have to start early. We could perform other services too as long as you bring your own parts! I have a lift and complete shop in my two car garage, so we'll sign up the first serious inquirers! Reply to this thread and I'll monitor it and set a date that works for all real soon. First come, first serve!

If you folks could take some pictures (with lots of light!) from the beginning to the end with a narrative it would be a great help - and certainly appreciated by others. Worthy of posting in the Hall of Wisdom. Wish I was closer to y'all 'cause this is on my short list...

Jack, what parts, fluids, etc. are needed? Sound like this might be a good preventative measure.

Jack,

I know there are several people interested in the slave cylinder thing, especially with experience on hand. They probably just haven't chimed in yet. Personally, I'm waiting until I need to dig in that deep for other reasons or the warranty is up.

I'm going to be doing the 24K and annual very soon. I can handle the work but I'll be doing it incrementally due to time constraints. I would really enjoy meeting more of the locals and could probably accomplish some of the work at a tech session at your place. So, sign me up as a tentative attendee, based on date of course.

Parts Needed For This Service

Quote:

This is a preventative maintenance issue and it is generally suggested that the Slave Cylinder be replaced around 40-50k miles. We would also be drilling a "weephole" that will allow the fluid to drain outside of the engine (just in case the slave cylinder ever leaked), instead of draining into the clutch area and ruining the clutch.
The parts cost about $100 - $120 which is a huge savings over the repair if the Slave Cylinder ever fails (approx $1,200 - $1,400).

You will need the following parts:
Qty. 1 - Clutch Slave Cylinder for your year bike
Qty. 4 - Aluminum Sealing washers where lines
attach to the new cylinder
Qty. 1 - Gasket for the Slave Cylinder
Qty. 1 - Qt. of Dot 4 Brake Fluid (approx.)

I have all the tools needed...specialty and otherwise. If you want to sign up to do this on your bike, please let me know ASAP. I''ll then set a date that would work for both of us!

I don't need any current work done on my LT. But if the schedule works out I would like to drive up from Atlanta to observe/help. Nothing like hands on experience and I might have to replace a clutch some day.

May we never find the end of the road!

Talking

I'm interested in having my '99 done. It is at 32000+ miles and sounds like a good preventative measure. Let me check on parts availability. I am not available for Nov 11th due to Veteran's Day commitment. I live in Columbia, SC so the commute should be fairly short. Thanks for the offer. Terry Carr

Jack-

I live very near in Cornelius and have just turned 50,000 on my 99KLT on the way back from Biketoberfest.

When my first rear drive went out at 16,000, they also replaced the clutch because they said they found a leaking seal. I'm not sure if the slave cylinder got done then or not, but with all the talk about ruining the clutch, I'd like to do the slave cylinder replacement and the weep hole procedure as a precaution.

I'll need to get the parts from Chicago BMW if that's still the best place.

I've read that Nov 11 might be a date for doing this? Basically I can do it whenever it suits after I get the parts that are needed.

It took me 2 weeks to get the parts from chicago bmw, for around $90 incl shipping, had to call every few days to check if they were shipped out yet.

It took me three weeks to get the parts from Chicago BMW when I ordered them in August. I wasn't really pleased with the service and I think I would rather pay the local dealer for better service.

I hate to be the bearer of possible bad news, but I don't know that purchasing from you local dealer would be any better. The last two slaves that I had replaced at the dealer, they had to order the parts before they started the work. I was with out my LT for 8 days both times.

I figured that they would have to order the parts but 8 days is a lot better than 3 weeks.

Javier at Chicago BMW just told me that all of the parts are in the country...don't have to come from Germany....and they can ship within 5 days. If you've bought stuff from them before, they'll use the faster ordering system to get the parts into Chicago within a day or 2 and then ship them right out to you. And you still get the full 20% off.

He said the total parts including the gasket, 4 seals, cylinder, and felt strip ($3.40 if your bike has one) totalled $88.68 + the usual $7-8 shipping.

How Many Are in At This Point For Sure???

I need a count on how many want to do the Slave Cylinder Replacement/Weephole procedure assuming parts get in on time. Once I have the first 3-4 spots reserved I will contact everyone interested and select a date that works. I'm easily located off a main hwy (I-77) in Cornelius NC and Mike Sheldon (a great guy and wonderful mechanic) is ready to helpout. Both of us have done the procedure twice, SOOO we should be able to do 3 or 4 if we make a day out of it!

First 3 or 4 to sign up...FIRST COME....FIRST SERVE!!!!

Hi Jack, I am very interested in getting this done...and you guys seem to have the experience it takes to make it happen.

If I'm not too far North, please add my name to your short list. Heh, its only 680 miles, and I can visit with my sister who just moved to Wallace, NC!

I'll order all needed parts in the morning.

Still Room For One More!

We have two people signed up for the Slave Cylinder Replacement/Weephole procedure. They are:

1. WES PHILLIPS - '99 LT Riding in from Lake Norman, NC
2. J. AVERILL TOWNSEND '02 LT Riding in from Bloomfield Hills, MI (WOW!)
3. __________________________________________________ ______

If WES and AVERILL will confirm by a PM to me I will work immediatly with you to establish a date that will work for all (cold weather is coming soon). If you have not done so, PLEASE order your parts YESTERDAY and let me know of an expected arrival date on your PM.

We still have room for one more! Mike Sheldon is an excellent mechanic and my shop has room to do two bikes at one time. He will Lead/Assist on one bike and I on the other. I think we could do three bikes for sure...SO...who'll it be?????

Jack,
would like to be counted in your limited number, but need to know when you are having it before I can commit.

Wink Come to Florida

I'd gladly become that 3rd bike and offer (host) my 3 car garage and wide driveway if you'll move the tech session to Tampa. Warm weather and lots of sunshine! An easy 8 hour run.......... Maybe even supply refreshments of our traditional Cuban sandwiches...

Jack, I just sent you a PM. I'll have my parts today. Just let me know when you want to hold the session. Thanks for putting this together.

My local dealer, Touring Sport BMW, had all the parts in stock. Total price with sales tax was about $90. From what others have said, that seems like a fair price, with no waiting for shipping. I didn't ask if they had any more slave cylinders in stock today.

The Three Have signed and I'll be posting a date SOON!

We now have three people signed up for the Slave Cylinder/weephole procedure and I will post the date VERY soon. Just need to contact all three with a few possible dates. All others are welcome to attend and may use the wide driveway to do other services if desired. Mike and myself (and I'm sure others) will be glad to assist as needed. I have a complete manual (printed), so we'll be in good shape for any other procedures! Stay tuned and we'll "crank this sucker up"!!!

Hey Chris, good to see your still kickin. I hope to make it also. I've been meeting more and more LT'rs from around the state. Just met a fellow, another John, 3 miles away with an '06. He isn't a forum member yet, but hope he signs up. I'll probably see if he wants to head over as well.
