Madisonvile, LA Wooden Boat Festival

I was going to post this in the "LT Picture Thread" but I don't have any photos that include the bike.

Yesterday I went across Lake Pontchartrain to the Wooden Boat Festival in downtown Madisonville, along the banks of the Tchefuncte (did I get that right?) River. Very cool - lots of old, new, and restored vintage wood boats, from the expected Chris Craft to homemade boats to big old classics. Here's a few photos:

Simple yet elegant:

No idea what you call this, but I heard someone say it ran on kerosene. It is very shallow draft. The simple engine had a unique "bang" sound to it; it sounded like the combustion cycle ran once every couple of seconds:

Beautiful:

I wish I caught this boat earlier, as it left. Classic. Reminds me of Sequoia, the Presidential yacht:

Howard, the second boat has a "hit of miss" engine. The engine speed is governed by opening the exhaust valve thus the miss part. My dad has a collection of the land based versions.

You can buy that engine, new from Lehman's Non-Electric, in Amish Country up near your home, Howard. If you've never been there it is an enormously interesting store. In summers, there is usually a vendor there selling homemade ice cream that is 'cranked' on site by that engine. Interesting machine.

EXCELSIOR !!!

Been there many, many times, Barrett. Lehman's is quite the place, and they expanded a few years ago. It's crazy-big now.

We have many items purchased from Lehman's in our home and in our emergency stock (hand water pump, water storage, kerosene lamps, etc.). I've seen the ice cream guy there and knew he had something different (engine-wise) going on, but didn't make the connection!
