Hurricane Karen

The first real storm of this hurricane season to come near us looks like it's on its way. Hurricane/Tropical Storm Karen is expected (based on which forecast you believe) to hit east of New Orleans late Friday/early Saturday. Since I set up shop down here last February I did my civic duty: put together an evacuation kit (food, water, first aid supplies, tools, cash) and a plan. It doesn't look like we'll have to evacuate for this - unless they close the big flood gate next to my apartment building, in which case we do have to leave because this building is outside (unprotected) by the levee wall just outside our back door. Since there's no way to know at this time if they'll do that, I put the LT on the trailer and strapped it down. If we have to leave (for flooding or an extended power outage) I'll hitch the trailer to the truck and head somewhere nearby for awhile.

Keep your fingers crossed t's the small storm they are predicting, and damage and injuries are minimal. Grand Isle - right on the Gulf - is already doing a mandatory evacuation.

P.S. The fact that I'm starting a thread about hurricanes is surreal. It's always been a TV-news thing for us back in Ohio.

I went through hurricane Andrew in Kendall FL & you can never be over prepared. After what I went through I would leave at the first warning to evacuate without any hesitation.

Dave, I have heard that same comment from enough people here in New Orleans that it must be true. I hear you...

It's not looking - today - like a big one, but we'll keep a watch on it.

Hey neighbor!

I hadn't thought of that. I'm sure not going to drive 16 hours home to Ohio (and then 16 hours back) for an outage that lasts a couple of days. If we lose power here (the more likely scenario) I may be calling you. Thanks.

My wife was living in Homestead at the time of Andrew. She and group of friends thought it would be great fun and were throwing a hurricane party. Thank goodness that storm knocked some sense into her, so I didn't have to do it when we met a few years later.

Best to you for this one, Howard. Get out EARLY if the thing starts to look ugly!

Re: Hurricane Karen

Howard I have ridden out some of the best here, and we had little damage. mostly power outage was the worst of it. NO FLOODING! It would appear from reports east of us is going to get the brunt of the storm. So come on up.

Re: Hurricane Karen

Based on the storm's size and projected track I'm thinking there is no need to leave unless we lose power. I'll keep these options in mind. Thanks, guys.

A few weeks after I set up shop here I put together an evacuation kit. Regrettably, there are no desserts of any kind, including PIE. Lots of good, wholesome, no-prep-required food and beverages. In other words, boring. Maybe next time I'm at a sporting goods store I'll pick up some dehydrated dessert.

Thanks Gina, Steve, and the rest. It's looking better as time goes on.

Well Howard How did you like your first storm? Now you see why it is like crying wolf. But you have to remember the gambler, know when to hold em and know when to fold em!

Looks like it doesn't come ashore until late tonight, but even then it's taking a fortunate turn away, and it's much weaker than it was, or they predicted. I'll take it.
