Re: 10th ANNUAL NYD CHICKEN ARM RTE

I would love to change but there are few places open in Waco on NYD. We have tried to move it in the past with no success. That being said find a better place for us to go & I'll help push it along.

As the initiator of the original NYD RTE 9 years ago, I prefer to keep the tradition intact. It is one of the few (maybe only?) annual traditions that the SouthCentral group has maintained over the years, this being the tenth observance.

Hooters was selected because they were one of the few places that we could find open for lunch on NYD. Now, we go back because it is our tradition. Hooters has always accommodated us, regardless of the size of the party.

Is there a specific reason for inquiring about change?

Help push it along? Probably so, but please read my previous thoughts on the topic of tradition. Feel free to email me directly or telephone if you prefer to communicate more directly (this offer extends to all, not just Stevie. RE: location change... The topic was raised in the past, with the problem in Waco earlier this year, I thought I would bring it up.
Other than that, I look forward to ride up the back way, and seeing everyone.

It is a great way to bring in the new year.

I understand the safety concern, Jim. I am unaware of any outlaw gatherings in Waco that day. Further, I suspect that the rabble rousers will be up late partying NYE and will still be asleep by the time we wrap up our little rowdy group.

Tony, For me the "Tradition" is the "First" ride of the new year and most importantly the "People" that show up so we can catch up on things that have happened in our very busy lives over the past year. Many of us only see each other this one time in the year. It (for me) has NEVER been the "Place" where we meet. It has been said by some that they would NEVER come to the NYDR because it was at Hooters. The number of people have dropped over the years do to many reasons & this is just another one. If I remember correct Hooters was pick...
1) because it was open.
2) because it could hold the bigger groups (with no notice) we use to have.
I would like to entertain the idea of changing the location only so we might get the numbers up again.

With that being said see y'all in Wacko next year !!!!!

Thanks, Stevie, I agree with you most of the way, but we split off towards the end.

Yes, it is more about the people about the place, but tradition tends to include place as well. Thanksgiving dinner at Nonna's was about being with family and celebrating all that we are blessed with, especially each other. Nonna has been gone for many years, but Thanksgiving goes on. Not everyone can make it, and Thanksgiving goes on. Still, it always seemed more special, more original, more lots of things, when it was at Nonna's.

Tradition does include place, but traditions do evolve over time. Part of what makes it a tradition is holding on to all of the elements that one can.

As for those that have told you that they would never go as long as it was at Hooters, I respect their right to choose not to participate in our tradition. Maybe there are also those that will not go if it is at a place that serves alcohol, or at a place that serves pork, or at a place that is open on Sundays, or because the owner's wife's second cousin's son's girlfriend's mother slept with so and so, or one of a myriad of other reasons. These folks are choosing to put people over venue, as is their right. That said, perhaps it is not about the people to them. "I want to be part of your tradition, but only if you change this or that to accommodate me" does not at all sound like someone who wants to integrate our tradition.

Of course, I could be wrong, I often am.

I love the NYD ride, however, I too would like to see a different place. Food is not that great at Hooters and selection is limited - for what my PiePrincess 2 cents is worth.

I've found a place that said they would be open. They are on the river just west of IH35.

Guys, as you all know my daughter is at Baylor. We eat at this place often and it is AMAZING!!!! Farily new place and when the weather is great the deck and bar outside are packed and it sits on the Brazos - nice view! Super brisket nachos, wonderful fish dishes, and the BEST knock your socks off margaritas - which if you are the driver of the MC I would not suggest you have but since I, the Pie Princess, am a pasenger I can be bungeed on back and carted home by Mr. Pie.

I love to start the year out right with a ride ( weather Permitting )
a big plus to the ride is seeing all of you that can make it. I can tolerate the food @ Hooters, given the limited openings on that day, but would like a change. What can we do to increase the turnout.

Open to suggestions.

You all know my feelings on this, but I am but one person.

Two of you have spoken up about change in venue, and Gina recommended an alternate place (they must have amazing pie!).

I propose that anyone who has a recommendation for an alternate Waco-area lunch place that is open NYD, simply put the name of the venue where they want to meet/eat next to your name on the list. Not putting a location next to your name indicates your willingness to continue the tradition of meeting at Hooters for this year.

Whichever location has the most selections appearing on the list by noon on Christmas Day is where we will go. No secret ballots, no politics, no bs.

Any objections? Any suggestions for alternate selection method?

We are out for Hooters. Not sure how the above recommendation of posting your name and suggested place is different from the poll we had going but I'm not into BS so you guys have fun!

Not into BS, either. One big difference is transparency, another is flexibility.

Everyone gets to vote, other options remain open, and people can change their mind and "re-vote" if they see someone else's suggestion that they prefer over their original selection.

Democratic vs Napoleonic methods.

Re: 10th ANNUAL NYD CHICKEN ARM RTE

Wow! I feel like the guy who walks into a bar right after a room clearing brawl. I know we all come from different backgrounds and have strong opinions, but if I can be so bold as to provide one man's perspective.

We are all united by our love of riding. Some of us over time have built stronger bonds. I grew up in a family scattered to the four winds. Our Holiday traditions were never about where we were or who's idea it was. It was always about who we were with. I know I'm younger than many, only 58, but I learned early that things and places didn't warm my heart, it was the people. Always the people. The stories, the laughter, the memories. It's time for peace on earth, good will toward men, even if it's just in our hearts because of the chaos around us.

OK, so what's the deal? I agree with everybody; I ride to Waco to see Stevie, Dep Dog, Kinsey, Bones, etc, not to eat wings. Waco was chosen because it was sorta central AND because it was open. Seems now folks are getting their panties in a wad over this and dropping out totally.

I've missed two of the 10 and did not want to miss this one. So Deputy, is there a list or not? If so, put me on it.

So, lets start a new list...we keep Waco and the News Years day ride, and the Friendships. I would like to change to Manny's on the River. If that does not work out, next year a different place in Waco, or Hooters again. After all it is a RTE.

Oh, cummon Stevie; I won't drive 470 miles (rt) just for some chicken arms but I'd do twice that for the fellowship of folks I've been dining with for 10 years (with two exceptions) to celebrate the New Year!

PS, Hey Tony, I don't see your name on the new list! Too much controversy? If you and Stevie don't come, I'm out too. Its bad enough we lost Griff!

I'm going as long as it is not at Hooters. Nothing to do with the riff between Tony & myself Sammie is trying to get off to come but will not if at Hooters.

Awwww, Russ, you make me blush, my Brother! Would not be the same without you, or Stevie. He gets under my skin (and maybe I get under his, too, I dunno), but I still look forward to seeing him. Hope he and Sammie make it.

I was planning on going, then found out that I had not one but two more surgeries before the end of the year, both arising from the 04 October crash. Had MRI on Monday, met with orthopaedic surgeon Tuesday. Replacing head of radius bone in elbow with a titanium ball is being put off for now. I'll know next week if the other surgery is still on. So tired of so many surgeries. UGH.

With the joint replacement off the table for now, and hopefully for a long time, I hope to make it to see your ugly mug, Russ, and everyone else's, too.

Jim, since you took the initiative, can I leave it in your (more than) capable hands to make the final confirmation whether Manny's, BJ's and/or Rudy's will be open NYD? Looks like Manny's is leading in the preference poll as of now. Rudy's may be a good alternate and I believe their seating style will be most accommodating to our group size and our propensity to wander and mingle with others in the group, more so than a regular "sit-down" type of restaurant.

Looking forward to seeing everyone, longtime attendees, some-time attendees, and first-timers, everyone, wherever we meet.

Rudy's would be a good choice. It's a bit more casual than BJ's and I agree that visiting would be easier there.
