Crash - Greetings from Medical Center Of Plano

80 y.o. driver turned in front of us yesterday whilst we were en route to meet up with Blue Knights chapter for a brekkie ride.

Facial lacs, wrist and elbow Fx for me. Thank GOD helmet intact.

Suzanne ejected over vehicle and had internal bleeding.

We both had emergency surgery. Both well remain in trauma center here.

iPhone is FUBAR. I am in room 532 in Ortho/Trauma Ward.

Holy Schnikies. Sorry to hear this report but here's hoping it's a fast and full recovery.

Now, the first question that came to mind: did the hospital put you in the same room...?

Re: Crash - Greetings from Medical Center Of Plano

Thanks to Paul who gave me Tony's hospital info I was able to chat with the big guy a couple of times today.
Some broken bones but nothing critical, and he is in good hands at the trauma center. He suffered what looked like a mild heart attack today however the cardiologists don't think so and will run some more tests tomorrow. If all is well he might be able to go home tomorrow.
As of a few minutes ago he was getting muscle relaxants to help him fall asleep, however he wanted to go see Suzanne first.
Now Suzanne's condition is a bit more serious than Tony's, and while she did not get any broken bones or skin abrasion she suffered some internal damage requiring complex surgery. Her stay in the hospital will be longer than Tony's.
I'll try to post another update tomorrow evening.

Re: Crash - Greetings from Medical Center Of Plano

I spoke with Tony again today and he was still pretty drugged up to minimize the pain level. Tomorrow he'll get the results of the scan performed to determine if he did have a heart attack yesterday, so that's one more day in the hospital; this may be the best thing for now.
Suzanne is not doing too well but recovering from her extensive surgery on Sunday. I have not talked to her yet.

Tony's LT was totalled, as expected, as were his and hers iPhones and laptop that was in the top case. Getting new phones is not a priority now, but it will be a while before Tony and Suz update their contacts and be able to call anyone.
That's all for today...!

They are on AT&T. Thank you for your offer Wade. Tony mentioned that the other party's insurance will buy the new phones; just not sure when, and I think it is not his/her priority although it would have been nice for them to be able to reach out.

Re: Crash - Greetings from Medical Center Of Plano

Tony is going home today, which is bittersweet as Suzanne is staying behind.
Tony's heart is fine and it is suspected that it was just muscle spasms on his left arm that caused the original concerns.
Tony was actually receiving some basic physical therapy when I first called, and that is a good sign.

Suzanne is still pretty drugged up and docs were running tests to verify that there is no damage other than internal, i.e. no broken bones, etc...

I will try to catch Tony before he leaves the hospital as I don't have a home phone for him and his cell was busted in the crash.
More updates to come, and hopefully they will be from Tony himself sometime tomorrow.

Re: Crash - Greetings from Medical Center Of Plano

Last update for the day: when I called Tony he was waiting for his ride home, but he would only leave after visiting with Suzanne.
He was still groggy and tired but looking forward to sleeping in his own bed I'm sure!
Be well Brother T!

Re: Crash - Greetings from Medical Center Of Plano

I am humbled by the outpouring of love, friendship, support snd prayers from this little community of ours, Thank you to each and every one of you.

I was released last night, but it pained me greatly to leave my Suzanne behind, it seemed unfair. Sleeping in my own bed was not so great, the adjustability of the hospital bed, the pillows surrounding me, and the safety rails added a feeling of safety, and the PCA pump with the enhanced dosing and optimized interval, in addition to the oral medications, not to mention the nurses, techs, and other staffers checking in on me regularly took me the distance to being as physically and emotionally comfortable as I could expect. Knowing that Suzanne was at the other end of the hall, close to the nurses's station, took it even further.

SO..... what happened?

Sunday morning we left the house about 0830 to get some fuel and meet a bunch of brother and sister Blue Knights for a breakfast ride out through the country. 0850 we left the fuel station for the rallying point, a local coffee shop. We headed along, not in any particular hurry. 0855 found us approaching the intersection of WB Stacy Rd at NB US 75(Central Expy). We were in the #1 lane (closest to outer curb), light turned green, and we approached the intersection to cross through and continue on.

In my peripheral vision, I caught a glimpse of a vehicle approaching left to right, not good. No time to stop, no time to evade. Diverting to the right might result in him broadsiding us and possibly driving over us. Staying on course would likely result in us hitting his front wheel/axle/motor, a very rigid structure likely to increase injury potential and decrease survivability odds. I determined our best shot was to aim for the pax door and hope to hit some energy absorbing structures designed to protect the on-board pax from side impact collision. I find it fascinating that my brain came up with all of this in a split second.

I found my mark, targeted it, and I shouted "HANG ON!" Then, the lights went out. I woke up on the ground, my wright eye all but swollen shut, Both arms, wrists, and elbows were in pain, as was my left leg. Suzanne! Suzanne! I called out, and I saw her. She was standing there, surrounded by my brothers and sisters. The Blue Knights, you see, is a Law Enforcement motor club, and thus the people really were my family. Not blood kind, perhaps, but something that runs much deeper and with much stronger ties.

One of them had come upon us about one traffic light cycle post-crash and phoned ahead to the rest of the group, who were barely a mile away. in two minutes, they were on scene, secured the area and established a perimeter, and had blocked and redirected traffic around the area. They tended to my wife, identified potential witnessed and collected their identifiers, and made sure local LE was alerted and that rescue was en-route. Some people fussed at the inconvenience to their lives that this caused, it must suck to be them, so miserable.

LE and rescue arrived, and incident command was handed over to local LE. Not a better sight to see than these fine folks. Thanks, to, to Allen, TX, PD (especially Ofc Lopez) and Fire/Rescue.

We got to them ED @ MCP, and Suzanne and I were separated and worked by two different trauma teams. More brethren started flowing into the trauma area and kept Suz and I updated. Broken bones both arms for me, possible fractured cheek bone, road rash, and other injuries. Just as the doc said to count backwards from 100, I saw the smiling face of one of my brothers who said not to worry about Suzanne, that she was in good hands, and that neither of us would be alone, that whey would take turns standing watch over us both. With this, I felt a real source of peace and was ready to drift off and let them S repairing my body.

Hopefully, Suzanne will stabilize and be able to come home soon. I am unable to drive because of a promise I made not to drive if I have had any narcotic in preceding 6-8 hours. My BK brothers and sisters have mapped out a schedule for who will be helping with transpo, with meal prep, housekeeping, etc, whilst Suz and I convalesce.

Between my friends near and far in this online community, and the local support of my BK extended-family, I have much to be grateful for.

My thanks to each and every one of you for your well wished and prayers, PLEASE, Please please, keep us in your prayers as we are not yet out of the woods.

Antony and Suzanne.

Re: Crash - Greetings from Medical Center Of Plano

Greetings, all!

Both Suzanne and I are both home from hospital. Suzanne stayed several days later than I did. Pain continues to be a constant companion for both of us, but I find some peace in knowing that hers will not be chronic.

Lucky me, I get to go back next week for more surgery to try to identify and (hopefully) correct some nerve damage. I also have several pieces of glass embedded in my face that I am going to have removed (on a different day). Please keep my medical care team in your thoughts and prayers that they continue to do their amazing work with success.

We have home health coming 7 days a week for wound care and for PT and OT. The company we were assigned to has some great RNs and PTs, but their company's administrative capabilities truly suck. Wrong supplies ordered, overworked staff, missed appointments, and so forth. Scary considering LHC is a large, multi-state organization that has contracts servicing many large health systems. I got ahold of an upper-level executive at the home office, and it is amazing how quickly things began to straighten out.

Bike is totaled. I did not get what I had asked for, but I got enough. The answer to the question most likely at the tip of your tongue right now is "I have no idea." I have more important things to sort out and deal with right now than to consider whether Whether or not I will return to riding or what my replacement mount might be. Healing is at the top of that list.

Thank you all for the PMs (box is full), emails, texts, calls, visits, and, most importantly, your prayers and goodwill. There were days that these were what kept us going when all seemed dark.

I am not on here much, but will try to do better. I can be reached by email at [my-handle-on-this-site] at aol dot com.

Thank you again to all for everything!

PS - I will be posting some LT things for sale soon, including Russell Day-Long 3-pc seat set, BMW Comfort Seat set for 2005+ LT (never used), JPegs/Mick-O-Pegs combination set, Dauntless trailer hitch with factory custom receiver to handle Ball or Plate type trailer connections, Cee Baileys windshield (not the one on bike LoL), CoPilot Accessory shelf and several different versions of their L & R side shelves, Blue Sea aux fus boxes, Garmin Zumo 550 with Lifetime Maps updates, Valentine 1 Radar detector (2015), with Concealed Display Adapter and Remote Audio Adapter, BMW Passenger Floorboards (complete kit with mounting plate that replaces factory peg mounting plate), Sena 20S bluetooth comms, extra front and rear wheels so you can have your spare set of rubber pre-mounted, brand new (never mounted) ME 880 front and another front ME880 with 80% remaining, and more, likely including my UniGo trailer (LED lighting, bra, new spring, new tire) which was safely parked in the garage at the time of crash.

Re: Crash - Greetings from Medical Center Of Plano

Recovery is going slowly, but we are progressing.

Suzanne's wound is healing. Will be a while before she can return to work, she has a lot of therapy ahead to build back strength and stamina. She's doing her best.

My surgery last week, again on left arm, went well, according to doc. She is hopeful that, after swelling goes down and all is healed, I will have near-normal use of my left hand. Will always look a bit off because of the way the joint is oriented and scar tissue. Says that can be fixed, but I am not up for any MORE pain than we are already dealing with.

Thanks, all, for your well wishes and prayers. If you feel so inclined, continued prayers are appreciated.

Re: Crash - Greetings from Medical Center Of Plano

Tony, Best of luck on the recovery. It seems like too many times we become the victim of someone else's incompetence. Sounds like a lot of physical therapy on the horizon. Personally I found that walking in water, if it's available helped me a lot after an accident. And don't forget the main meds. They will make it a lot easier to keep up with the PT too.

Seems like a bunch of us baby boomers are either in accidents or recovering from one procedure or another. I think it has a lot to do with our active lifestyle ( things break) vs. our parents who didn't seem to lead an as adventurous life. In my opinion, the alternatives are either wearing out or rusting....

I think most of us choose to wear out and just fix it when it breaks. Heal quickly....

Re: Crash - Greetings from Medical Center Of Plano

With your thoughts, well wishes, and prayers, I am making progress, as is Suzanne.

So much we have to be thankful for, and this year's Thanksgiving Day holiday was just that. Wow.

Last week, I had a little surgery to remove some pieces of glass that were embedded in my face. Doc pulled out a nice little cube-like piece of tempered glass from one place, and some slivers/shards from two other wounds. There remain a few remaining suspect locations in the same general area, but doc wants to hold off on doing too much at once in such a relatively small area.

Physical therapy and occupational therapy for both Suzanne and I is progressing somewhat, but far too slow for our preference. All things in their time, we are trying to learn new levels of patience.

I hate this cold, rainy weather we have had since last week. It is wreaking havoc with the joints and areas that I have injured in this crash. UGH!

Still, at least we survived, and I am ever so grateful for that.

Thanks for sharing your story. I understand the "one moment you see it coming and then, you are waking up somewhere else." I am glad you have had good care. Please take your time and follow the Doctors' orders. I know it is hard to go at the pace of the experts but they have seen lots of people trying to recover and really can guide you along with your best in mind. I know it's hard to follow all the restrictions but can make the healing go faster and avoid future problems. Please keep us updated on your progress.
