Re: Lane Splitting Bill: Texas

I Hope it passes! Lane splitting here in CA is awesome.

I live Northeast of Sacramento - if I have a meeting in San Francisco on a Friday, I ride the bike, just so I can lane split to get out of the Bay Area in a halfway reasonable amount of time. Saves me 2 hours on the commute home!

Re: Lane Splitting Bill: Texas

This sentence (and specifically the word "weaving") makes it sound irresponsible:

"Lane splitting ó weaving through slow or stopped traffic, often by driving in narrow spaces between cars..."

Good luck - it's a great thing and about the only thing keeping me in California :-)

Re: Lane Splitting Bill: Texas

I'll need to get a skinnier bike and headlight modulator.

My normal commute seldom presents any opportunity to take advantage of this, but once in a while I'll be somewhere and find myself wanting to split or at least filter a long stoplight line.

I had a co-worker from CA whose impression was Texas traffic laws seemed to be applied to impede the flow of traffic rather than promote it. I let him know he was more than welcome to return to CA.

Re: Lane Splitting Bill: Texas

I hope it gets passed so Texas can join the rest of the world and California in enjoying one of the perks of motorcycling.
Obviously this would imply education programs for both riders and drivers to be safe.
When splitting lanes on my way to work most cagers actually move aside to make way for me, and I try to give a Thank You wave whenever safe. A little courtesy goes a long way. Of course it irritates me when some yahoo on a sports bike zooms through at higher than safe speed for the space he has.

Re: Lane Splitting Bill: Texas

We've had similar laws in NSW (Australia) since Feb last year which is fantastic... except it made me buy a 2nd (narrower) bike... lol...., however there is a clear distinction made between lane "splitting" - which is still illegal, and lane "filtering" - being allowed to slowly pass between cars stopped or travelling in the same direction at less than 30kph (about 18.5mph).
The use of the term "filtering" has eased some of the tension on adoption of the law... as the meaning of the word invokes a slow speed manoeuvre, as opposed to splitting a lane at higher speed as seen on way too many youboob videos.
They state govt even made a video about it...
Lane filtering - Motorcyclists - Staying safe - NSW Centre for Road Safety

good luck with your action to get it through!
cheers from the other side...

Re: Lane Splitting Bill: Texas

The thing to note about the legislative process in Texas is this: at the start of a legislative session, everyone rushes to enter bills that satisfy their constituents. But then reality sets in and only a small fraction of those bills actually pass. But the legislator gets kudos for "supporting constituents."

And the legislative session runs for only six months every two years.

I'm not holding my breath on this issue...

Wait - huh - what?? Politicians merely appearing to pander to their constituents??

Re: Lane Splitting Bill: Texas

I've been working on legislative issues since the 80s so I know the process. There's a hundred ways to kill the bill, but that shouldn't stop us from trying.
