Case weighs just under 11 pds and can hold 22 pds. Adapter plate is under 100 and the current cost of the case with lights is about 400. lots cheaper than any BMW case. Mine has never leaked water. I do like the look of the Beemer case and believe it is a nice case but I all ready had this and it works well.

Troppo and John, imagine how i feel here, i just took delivery of a brand new 90th aniversary (2013) and received my Givi V47 yesterday to put on, now when i read comments in this thread I feel ashame... :-) I'll try to be happy anyway :-)

Re: 2014 RT Topcase

$1000-1500 for a top case I like my 07 RT but not enough to pay

that much for a top case. I bought a Shad case for $365 out the door. Looks

great and the extra money will go towards fixing the fuel strip. Maybe BMW

will have a recall on this

Not sure if serious...

My top case is unpainted. It's the standard small case in black plastic. Looks great on the Callisto grey bike, matches the rest of the plastic bits and blends perfectly. Also has that nice silver BMW plate on the back.

Skydiver...I did it myself with a spray gun and an air compressor. I got my paint at a Sherman Williams paint store (one that also deals in auto paints, not just house paint). The paint code for a Quartz Blue Metallic BMW is A18...the same as the BMW automobiles. I verified this with my BMW dealer.

Sorry, I thought you had painted the top part as well.It does blend well with the bike indeed.

Wow, an observation can quickly get turned around.
Snobbery? No.
Aesthetics is a personal thing and I shared my personal observation regarding the previous RT model top case on the new RT after feeling prompted by Jeff's post.
Jeff's looks good particularly in the new colour, however to me it just looks wrong, not bad. I didn't come to that conclusion from looking at Jeff's post however.
I did a ride with some buddies over 7 days just a few weeks ago and there were two new RT's in the herd.
One of the guys has done exactly what Jeff has done and the other has gone the new option.
I had many hours and miles to observe the two bikes together and the choice was clear for me.
I think that Jeff's bike looks great, I love that colour and will go that option, I'm jealous.
This forum discusses the appearance and functionality of bikes and farkles all of the time so lets try and leave the personal criticism's to other forums.

Well said mate!

I also think that Jeff's bike look great, even though I wasn't able to bring myself to like the black.....even with the red tinge in it! I also prefer the appearance of the new case over the older design. I think that the new design is more angular, and I like the extra brake light on top. When I had ordered my '14, I had also ordered the top case. The new one, but it seem that I had some miscommunication with the dealer, because when the time came, the top case was the old unpowered one just like the one on my '07 (or the one that Jeff has). Did I return that case for the new one? No. It was no big deal, especially since I only put the top case on the bike when I expect to be needing the storage room, otherwise I ride without it.

Re: 2014 RT Topcase

I guess I am not sophisticated enough but Jeff's top box looks like it is made for the bike. If I could convince my retirement fund that a new bike was an investment I would buy the same colour Jeff chose, my wife loved that colour as well.

I realize this is an old thread, but I am looking for a Quartz Blue Full featured top case. Can anyone point me in the direction of the dealer who was offering the deal? Or where else to get one at a good price?

Thanks!

Have you checked eBay? Are you looking for the large or small topcase? Amazon is also another option. MaxBMW typically has fair pricing (no BMW price is going to be cheap) on Amazon.

For my small topcase, I paid about $485 new from MaxBMW via Amazon Prime which included the lock kit (which I think they will key to your bike for free if you send them the key code). I then took it to a local bodyshop and they painted it for $145.

If you watch eBay, you can sometimes catch a bargain but finding one already painted to match your bike might be more difficult.

Mine is also Quartz Blue Metallic and it looks great.

Re: 2014 RT Topcase

Thanks for the info, I will check out MaxBMW.

Looking forward to seeing the color in person.

I want to get the large with central locking since this will be for my Girlfriend and I to tour around on.
Getting one painted is an option if nothing else pops up.

FYI,
A few years ago, I sent several e-mails to the person at the Ohio dealership who's name had been posted or provided me (I don't recall the details) and never received a response. The deal that someone received was probably a one-off as the dealer realized they might get in trouble for discounting the top case to the extent they were. I suspect that Motorrad frowns on such and would want to keep all it's dealers happy by keeping everyone in line.

Re: 2014 RT Topcase

I believe it was Mark from Ohio Cycles. He is no longer working for them.

This is the only place I've seen a top case at a discount. I'm not sure if "Montego Blau" is the color for blue.

Hello Vertible:

In Feb of this year I bought a 49l topcase with the electronics, LED light and carpet for $855 from this dealer:

United Online Stores GmbH
Neureuterstrasse 55
76185 Karlsruhe
Telefon: (049) 721 / 92 09 19 99
eMail: [email protected]
www.moto24.de

It's not the quartz blue, but you'll save enough $ to have it painted.

I also got the auxiliary brake light for $145 and lock cylinder for $22. Shipping was only $70. I saved so much money I also bought the heated low seat for $288. The VAT was deducted during the checkout.

They were super easy to work with, it shipped right away and arrived in about 10 days. I would highly recommend.

Here's some links to the product I purchased

Brake light: https://www.bmw-motorrad-bohling.com...00gtl-k48.html

Hi all,

Just got my trusty 49l topcase back from my neighbor and automotive repair shop owner, he did an amazing job matching the Mars Red on our new RT. Case is 11 years old and this is the third bike itís been on. When we travel I do take all three cases into our room for the night, just seems to work best for the way we travel. Love the new RT and will report back after our 23 day/4500 mile Western States Walkabout coming up in a month.

See ya on the road,

Mark in Chico

Re: 2014 RT Topcase

Joining in on this thread:

I am looking for a BMW top case for my 2016 R1200RT and apparently, I cannot use the brake light functionality on the fully equipped model because I do not have central locking on my moto. This is according to a tech from Max BMW. Attached is a pic of under my passenger seat, and the circle is a connector not connected to anything. Is that for the tail light? Is the tech incorrect and I can use that premium model case with the integrated tail light?

I want the nicest case with the gas struts and the brake light if my bike is plug in ready.

Mark's case above looks great but does not have the brake light. If I cannot use the tail light, I like this look.

Does anyone have any pictures of how that top case is plugged into under the seat?

This thread has been very helpful.

Thank you,

FBD

2014 RT Topcase

That is not the connecter for the top box. The connecter is round and I do not see it on the photo of your bike that you posted. Most likely the tech is correct. I am posting a picture of the connecter and my top box.2014 RT Topcase-img_0110.jpg2014 RT Topcase-img_0881.jpg2014 RT Topcase-img_0851.jpg

My top case is the pre-2014 style. No "connector."

You can in fact electrically connect up a top box to the RT, WITHOUT CL. What you need is harness PN 61128548712 . It's about $187 IRC. The harness encompasses part of the system that goes to the 4 central locking mechanisms. Short story is forget those. You can't get central locking without the alarm and another major harness change.

So what you do is get this harness, hack off the un-needed wires. Then you plug it into that four pin flat connector. I don't ride with my top case unless I'm on a trip. And I didn't want to pull my seat off to stick the case on. So I actually used some velcro straps to attach the new round ended plug you need to go to the top case, and I secured it below the rack. The plug comes with a weather cap, so it's fine there.

I had added the BMW LED to my GTL case I bought used. I also figured out which one of four wires is the brake hot feed. The LED light is brake only and not a running light. But I snipped that hot wire and added it to my Skene rear P3 red lights. So that turned it into run/brake lights, plus a flicker patented by Skene. Makes the bike really visible from the rear.

Check out the first couple posts, and the last post on this thread. I've documented some pictures. I had issues with re-keying it. Dealer fixed that.

Re: 2014 RT Topcase

BTW, those four wires. One is ground. One is hot for the brake light. And one is a hot for the inside LED light. Fourth wire isn't used. But the inside light works as well. Just thought I would mention that as well.

Part number 3 in this diagram.

Thanks again for all your help. I think I have narrowed the case down to two choices both of them are the 2014 Dash older version cases. I believe my pioneers are plastic so I am considering a plastic top case if I have the ability to paint match that plastic. Since I don’t have the correct cabling for the brake light in a top case I’ve decided on the older style case. Here are the parts that I’m looking at and would like to know if I am looking at the correct items.

Plastic top case:
https://www.bmw-motorrad-bohling.com...600gt-k48.html

Aluminum top case:
https://www.bmw-motorrad-bohling.com...nium-matt.html

Lock:
https://www.bmw-motorrad-bohling.com...-28-liter.html

Also, can you give me pros and cons for aluminum vs plastic?

As a reminder on a 2016 R1200RT no central locking.

Ride on!

-92merc,
Thanks for the info on ability to wire without CL. That’s a little beyond me at this point.
What’s the purpose of that 4-pin connector anyway? Got to be there for a reason.

It's just there to be a connection point to attach the CL harness, if you have CL. They can't really just end it with dead wires. So I suppose they had to do something.

All I really did was strip back the outer protective cover to the CL harness I bought and cut a couple of wires off. Then put some electrical tape around what I stripped back. No soldering or anything involved. Just plug it in after that.

mt65804, so if I understand correctly, that round cylinder in your photo, is the harness that goes to the topcase to power the brake light and the interior light. You tapped into that connector and routed the three wires to the back side of that existing "connector to nowhere". So where is the additional harness that I thought was necessary?

this thread also discussed that harness that 92merc mentioned:

https://www.bmwlt.com/forums/rt-seri...connector.html

In that thread, there is a picture that DavidJax posted that shows the round connector connected, so I imagine he has CL. He also has that "connector to nowhere", connected to something.

I appreciate the help and am now rethinking if I'd rather have the old style case with a handle and no brake light and no additional hassles or have the new premium topcase with the brake light.

again, if anyone has any thoughts on aluminum vs plastic topcase, I'd appreciate your insight.

You have it figured out. I don't have CL so instead of buying the harness I made one and used posi-taps. Everything works as it should, including the OEM add on brake light.

New topcase before and after paint. I did extensive research on whether to go with the newer style topcase on my ‘16 without CL. I decided to go with the older style and had it painted with an excellent clear coat for $120. It’s easy to remove parts to mask off the top and have it painted.
Since I don’t have central locking, I did not want to have the light accessory area empty, and I like having the handle on this case.
I ordered the case from Bohling, and received in about a week and a half. Very impressed with shipping speed. It was in customs for about 3 days.
I also ordered top and side case interior bags. I like the topcase duffel a lot, but the side ones seem like a much lower quality.
The topcase holds nicely two helmets.
I appreciate all the comments on this thread and others that helped me in making my decision. I don’t regret it one bit.
I also have a backrest that I posted pics of on a different thread that adds another option when we don’t want to have the case on.
Thanks to all.

WOW. What a positive difference. That might be the best $120 you spend on the looks of your bike. It really ties everything together.

Thank you for sharing the before and after photos.

P.S. The stripes on the side cases look cool too.

Re: 2014 RT Topcase

The pre-2014 large top case also works (and looks) fine on a 2019 "option 719 spezial blue planet metallic" R1250RT.

Re: 2014 RT Topcase

I think the older style Topbox looks fine on the post post 2014 model years. But I do believe the new style Topbox looks better and conforms more to the lines of the bike. The addition features brake light, interior light, and central locking are also welcome upgrades.2014 RT Topcase-58138114232__35aa8fb7-579a-436e-a0fc-f4be2d75d270.jpg2014 RT Topcase-img_1169.jpg2014 RT Topcase-img_1171.jpg

Good stuff, Thank you. My new-to-me r1200rt is identical to yours in year and color and I'm seeking a matched top case. Yours looks great.
