Agding GS Mirrors to the R1200RT

Hi,

I want to add a pair of GS mirrors to my 2006 R1200RT. I want the round GS mirrors, not the sleeker K1200RS mirrors. (From what I can tell, the round mirrors are higer and still allow full use of the lower mirrors).

What year mirrors need to be used?

I think that the shaft needs to be 10mm and the threaded portion needs to be 8mm.

Is that all? Is there any sort of mounting post or anything else that is needed?

Any closeup photos of the stalks mounted in the controllers?

Thanks.

Re: Agding GS Mirrors to the R1200RT

I have no idea what a R1200RT looks like from the cockpit.
But I just added mirrors to my LT and still awaiting a test ride to note the improvements in my rear. The install was easy enough the right parts, hardware and Allen tool. So you would know what I am talking about here are a couple pictures. Guess other RT'ers can help you more.

Check out a thread just posted yesterday.
Under R1200RT a thread 'show your scoots' post #520. I went there to see what your bike looks like and Voila!! Is that close up enough for you

I installed this kit on my '12 RT. The install was easy. 20 minutes. Looks great!

My dealer sold me GS mirrors last Spring, and I have no reason to think they were not the latest model. He also sold me the two clamps for the handlebar, and that was it. Easy as pie. And very, very convenient. I use the upper mirrors for the view way behind me, and the RT lower mirrors for side view. Much safer.

Sorry, that's the only crops of photos I can provide.

Re: Agding GS Mirrors to the R1200RT

The 2005-2009 don't require clamps. There is a boss in the switchgear housings that they mirrors mount. Nuts are needed though.

This is what I am trying to figure out. The housing looks like the mirrors drop in from the top and have a nut on the bottom.

But look at these mirrors for a GS, they screw in from the top and have a nut to torque it down.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Black-Bill...item2ec5d41d95

It looks like there is an addiitonal part needed that mounts to the switch clusters.

Those won't work with a pre-2010 and needs the mounts to work with a 2010 and up.

Re: Agding GS Mirrors to the R1200RT

Anyone have the Part NUmber for the GS mirror?

I know they have an 8 mm thread, but there are several GS mirrors available.

Thanks.

Re: Agding GS Mirrors to the R1200RT

Morning twkBMW,

These are the parts that I used on my '12RT. I know the brackets are different but the mirrors should be the same;

Part Number Description lb Qty
Each
32727673917 CLAMP 0.04 2 $30.52

51167698694 ADAPTER 0.04 2 $7.70

51167698470 COUNTER NUT 0.01 2 $1.86

51167698437 COVER 0.01 2 $2.02

51167699791 MIRROR 0.58 2 $74.12

You must also purchase: 51167698437, 51167698470, 51167698694. They are required w/the newest 791 mirror. The friction fit (241) mirror is NLA from BMW.
(note for the '12RT)

Hope this helps.

Re: Agding GS Mirrors to the R1200RT

Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but how do these mirrors lock down? I know there are two nuts that lock against each other, but is loctite needed or will the nuts alone hold. Seems to me if it was bumped it'd come loose.

Afternoon,

I used no Locktite-just the jam nut.
They stay in place.

These mirrors will not fit the OP's 2006 RT. They will only fit 2010-2013 GS and RT with the additonal brackets.

Re: Agding GS Mirrors to the R1200RT

I used the mirrors from Wunderlich, screw right into the switch assemblies with a nylock nut underneath, $54 and a huge improvement in visibility, Look under comfort and Ergonomics in the RT section. I only use 1, on the left bar.

Dan those K mirrors look fantastic and I agree they look nicer than the GS ones. I have a 2010 RT, will these fit on my bike. Where can you get them from? Thanks for posting the picture.

I ordered them from MAX BMW
http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/
I think they need an adaptor for the 2010+ model because I don't think the 2010+ models have holes in the handle bars to fit them
