Anyone install Armrests on RT with Topcase

I have a K1200GT which I put on a RT Luggage Rack which permitted me to install a RT Topcase on my rig. An interested inf any RT owner has found any passanger armrests that would work with the RT Topcase and rack set up? I know of three armrest makers for the LT, but have not found anything for the RT. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Here are some photos of my rig.

Nice set-up but one question comes to mind - if you put armrests on the rear seat how on earth is the pillion supposed to get on/off???

The armrests typically flip up or out so that the rider can get on and off easily.

Anyone install Armrests on RT with Topcase

Come on guyts - there has to be some of you RT's out there who desired to have armrests on your rigs. I emailed Don Mud who makes Eagle Armrests for the LT and he indicated that he has had a lot og interest from RT owners, but that he did not have access to a R1150RT rig to be able to take measurements and work up a solution. If there is any RT'er in the Orlands, FL area who could drop by Don's place so he can check it out - we might have something going here. If you can help his email is" "[email protected]"

Hello all Don Muddiman here,

I have some questions about the top box.

1) What is the width of the passenger back pad?
2) What is the distance between the inside of the top case hinges?

Knowing these distances will give me a better feel if it’s fesable to mount armrests.

Keep'em Humming,

Don

Don:

Here are some measurements that you asked for on the Forum. I have also taken some photos of the topcase for reference.

The inside distance between the hinges is 11 1/2 inches

The hinges are 2 1/8 inches wide and 3 1/2 inches high.

The backrest is 10 7/8 inches wide and 1 1/2 inches thick

The bottom of the hinge is 3 1/4 inches above the seat height

Hope this information helps.

Re: Anyone install Armrests on RT with Topcase

This weekend I finished up the first prototype armrests for the RT thanks to LaRae for letting me keep his BWM top case for several weeks. I still need to meet up with LaRae to test the design and see if there are any problems. I was limited with the armrests height but it should fit the standard passenger. Attached are some images of the completed product. The Carbon fiber mounting plate will not be the final product. I only used the Carbon fiber as proof of concept as it was the easiest and quickest way for me to get a finished product. If this works out my next step will to talk with my fabricator to see if he can do the part and what the cost will be. I will also need packaging, fasteners and other machined parts not shown.[/font]

Isn't there a safety issue here? In a spill, won't the armrests be in danger of trapping the pillion? - Just a thought.

Re: Anyone install Armrests on RT with Topcase

Yes there is a safety concern that's why I designed the armrests to fail in such situations. As the designer I had an unfortunate experience to test my design. I stalled the bike from takeoff going up a slight incline and down the wife and I went. The down side armrest failed and she never realized she had broken the armrests. A select hinge mount cross section area in combination with a select Aluminum alloy allowed me to provide this safety feature. They are designed to rest your arms not support you body weight. This the same design as the LT but with a different mounting plate.

Looks great, showed my wife, she loves you and wants a set as soon as they are available. At least I won't have to hear her complain about our friends on their LT with armrests.

Those armrests look fabulous. Better passenger accommodations are the only thing stopping me from ditching my K-LT in favor of a R-RT. I think the R is a superior overall bike, with the exception of passenger comfort.

If and when possible, please post photos of the entire assembly bolted to the bike.

Many thanks.

Don,

Those look great. Would you be kind enough to put me on some sort of waiting list for when they are available.

Should we just keep checking here for availability?

Thanks,

Louis

Hi Guys,

I am still researching suppliers for the mounting hardware for the RT, hopefully I will know more by the end of the month.

Re: Anyone install Armrests on RT with Topcase

I'm in love with Hanshi's color-matched RT top case on his K1200GT. Found a pic of his beautiful sea-foam green rig on Google and followed it here to his post... from 10 years ago... (yikes!) and thought maybe I could contact him. Alas, being newly registered I can't PM him :-(
If anyone still knows of him or of his gorgeous RT top case I'd love to try and find a similar set up for my K1200RS. Thanks folks.

Has anyone heard anymore about the 1200RT Passenger arm rest, by mudman? I'd be interested in a setup for my 2015 1200 RT.

Are these armrests available for a R1200RT from 2011?

Interested as well but my top case is the older RT model that has the handle at the rear and what looks to be a thinner smaller back pad.

Re: Anyone install Armrests on RT with Topcase

I went with Graber Industries. His are not specific to the RT because of the curvature, but he worked with me to get me one of his “blanks” (unbent, unpainted) and I did the rest. Came out really good.

Ooooh, that looks bloody awesome and I know my wife would LOVE something like that! If you don't mind me asking, which armrest did you get (15" or 17", straight back or radius back) and how did you go about attaching it to the top case?

Thx!

Re: Anyone install Armrests on RT with Topcase

Sorry, I don’t know how he gets his sizes. He sent me an unbent piece that was about 29” long. It had no radius, or bends. I put the radius in by hand to match the top case, then took it to a metal shop to bend the arms. I painted it, drilled 4 holes and bolted it to the top case.

Thanks for the info! I don't have much experience with metalwork, so I would likely just get the radial back version and fill any gaps with spacers, if necessary. I can't imagine the radius of the arm rest and the radius of the top case would be hugely different.

Last couple questions:
How solid is the the top case as an attachment point for the arm rest?
Does it flex much or at all?
Did you bolt it through both the inner and outer shells (right through to the inside compartment)?

Cheers!

Re: Anyone install Armrests on RT with Topcase

It’s pretty solid. Used 4 bolts thru inner and outer shell through to inside. Capped nuts with plastic caps. Wife has put full body weight on it a few times, against my advise. She doesn’t weigh much, but so far it’s held up.

I thought of getting the radius one too, but vendor talked me out of it. Probably because he asked if I was handy. I think you’ll do fine. Let me know how you do.

Is anyone still active here and was there ever a solution to the RT passenger armrest? I just purchased a 2003 R1150RT and am racking my brain trying to find a solution. Thanks. Aron

Trying to post pics but can't figure it out. Haha

Re: Anyone install Armrests on RT with Topcase

Hi
This would be a smart solution if you make one to mount on the top box. Then for shorter trips it wont be in the way
I have an K1200 GT mod 2008 up here in Norway. Most of the people driving BMW is not the youngest one and are always looking for more comfort on long trips. If you make an solution that fits several models you will have invented the wheel again. Looking forward to follow you. Have a nice Easter, drive carefully and wash your hands.
