My display keeps resetting itself

Every time I start a ride the dash display has erased the digital speedometer with the RT logo. I must go through the menu and reset it again. Does this mean anything?

Yes, you need a battery. How old is yours? Does it crank up nice and fast or does the starter seem labored.

It could be other things, but my bet is on the battery getting weak. You can have it tested, or if its over 3 years old, skip that and just replace it.

Re: My display keeps resetting itself

Yes that is what I thought but the battery is only 8 months old and it was an $89 battery from one of those batteries+Bulbs stores. I thought I would see how long a cheap battery would last and I found out. So now is the age old question of which battery to get?

Re: My display keeps resetting itself

If the battery is not at least $200 the BMW's will reject it!!

I have no advice on a battery, but I do know sometime last month there was a post debating batteries for the RT.

Re: My display keeps resetting itself

Battery suggested up a couple of posts looks good. I'm interested too. But for now Here is a battery I have used three times for ten years in my K13S. Works great and is cheap to your door.

I like it because you add the acid yourself so it is fresh. Follow the instructions. Do not leave out the charging after filling. That gives you 20% more capacity than not doing it.

You guys needs to know how to shop!!!!

You can get a good quality battery for that $89. See: https://www.walmart.com/ip/YUASA-GYZ...FREE/129243723 The perfect battery for the wethead RT!

On topic - I agree with the comment that it's probably your battery. You need to have it checked out. The symptom that you are having is typical for when the battery starts to fail.

To the OP.
Take your fully charged battery over to a tyre of battery depot and ask them to do a Capacity test on it. It will reveal the state of your battery.
In the UK, this test is normally free.

Autozone will test them for free as well in the US

Re: My display keeps resetting itself

I had the battery tested at the place that I bought it and of course they said it was good.
I ordered a new Yuasa from wall mart anyway. Better safe.

Re: My display keeps resetting itself

remember "FACTORY ACTIVATED" means the acid is already in the battery. It could have been sitting on a shelf for a year or more. My battery was activated when I bought it. That's why you pay the big bucks

This is the very same battery as the one that you had suggested, and so I assume it's the same one that you are using. FYI, when the battery is delivered, it will be accompanied by a note indicating when the battery was activated and the voltage of the battery measured immediately before shipping.

Re: My display keeps resetting itself

You are spot on Beech. Just read an article on the topic in MCN , last month or two, on the subject. If you buy a battery from a good dealer you should be reasonably assured that they did the proper fill and charge process. Ask them to be sure. They will appreciate that you are aware of the need to condition a new battery correctly. Easier to return it to them if there are issues. Not sure how Yuasa would respond if you were responsible for the initial charging. Some peep get six years or more out of a AGM battery. Must be doing things right with maintenance also.

Why didn't you get the battery tested at an independent location. That way you cam go back to your purchase shop with some ammunition to argue the case and get a refund (IF it was the battery).
