So I have a 2009 1200rt with 54k mi on it. It’s my daily driver and besides replacing the fuel strip, it’s never had any problems. It’s almost completely stock (Remus exhaust) and I ride it to work daily but yesterday I went to start it and like always, I turn the key on and let it cycle through it’s pre trip and then hit the starter. Normally it fires right up but this time I heard a “pop” noise and then everything went dead. Turned the key to the off position and waited for a few seconds then turned the key to “on” and got nothing, no dash lights no headlights, nothing. Any ideas as to what this may be? Any help would be greatly appreciated
Sounds like a plate in the battery broke. Happened to me once while in the middle of a trip (nowhere, WVa). Battery wouldn't charge, couldn't jump-start the bike. Finally found a suitable replacement battery in a lawnmower repair shop. Problem solved. No idea why my old battery decided to fail that way, at that moment. Replacement battery lasted for more than 5 years, and was in that bike when I sold it.
That's interesting...I have never heard of that..so I guess basically one of the plates inside that battery broke causing the battery to short itself out...hence the popping sound...???...
Been on trip with dude on '14. Leave campground no problem. Stop 10 miles down road to fill up and that was all. Battery would not even test when I got it to a store up the road. Replaced my 15 battery shortly after that trip to avoid it happening to me. Heard it too many times on these as well as the constant headlight bulb every 6,000. Got rid of the turd.
I had a similar thing happen. Ended up getting it towed to my mechanic. It still turned the bike over slowly. As I had been riding all day I never presumed the battery had spontaneously sh#t itself.
I was pretty happy when my mechanic said it was just a battery
